I agree with the quote in the OP. He's being asked to create with his drives and passing from the top of the circle, and the Jazz have limited options---just a couple spot-up shooters, Favors on a pick-and-roll, and Hayward's own attempt at the rim.

He'll look great though when someone else is attracting most of the defense's attention. He's a great ball mover and versatile player.

Would you like to venture a guess at who that'll be, and when he'll arrive?

I think we also have to wonder if Burke is really our guy at PG. For whatever reason, he has not garnered any greater trust in running the offense this year. He looks like a wallflower a lot of the time, and I hate his inability to get to the free throw line. A lot.

Pretty much. There are few $10mm+ players who neither fill a primary offensive or defensive role nor are considered wildly overpaid. $10mm is an overpay for Hayward; you can get 80% of his impact in a spot-up shooter at 50% of the price (if you have actual primary offensive/defensive players on the roster...if not, what's the point?).

There are only 57 players in the league making $10mm+ this season. If the most important roles on the team are primary and secondary offensive hub and defensive anchor, none of which can be filled by Gordo, there are a lot fewer $10mm+ players than total spots for those roles.

Good point. If it were several million apart on the total contract offer, that would make Hayward's camp look even more foolish for rejecting the Jazz's offer...that would've been somewhere in the $11.5M/year range.

I know Hayward's reputation has taken a hit this year, but are we actually seriously suggesting that with his skillset, he can't be a freaking secondary offensive hub in this league?

He's better suited as the tertiary offensive hub on a playoff contending team. Anything higher than that and he'll fall flat on his face like we saw this year. Put Hayward on any of the elite teams in the league, Miami, San Antonio, Indiana, OKC, Houston, LA Clippers, Portland and he's probably not even the 3rd best player on any of those teams.
