DLeague Affiliate and Murph

It wouldn't hurt to invite him to summer league. Kid can shoot.

Especially considering Hoopshype is reporting that the Jazz are interested in PJ Harrison, which I assume is at 23. Save the pick and give Murphy that shot again.

It would be kind of fun if Jazz had, Burke, Burks, E. Murphy, and K. Murphy on the team next year.

I like the way you think.

It also appears from the article that the Jazz will be the single affiliate for the Stampede instead of the arrangement they had this past year with Bakersfield. It makes one wonder if the Jazz are going to sign a bunch of undrafted free agents or DLeague vets, take them to camp, waive them and then assign them down and it would appear that the high first round draft pick would be a likely candidate to play in the DLeague.

By high 1st, you mean #23, right?
You can only assign two players to your D-League team, IINM. The rest of D-League players actually have contracts with the league, which allows them to sign with any NBA team and have the D-League contract terminated. So you can't "horde" talent and have their rights remain with the parent team. It's a different structure than minor league baseball, for example.

The single affiliate model is attractive to NBA teams because it gives them control over coaches and thus, playing style and minutes for their assigned players. The single affiliate is also key if the NBA is going to make it a true minor league system in conjunction with the raising the draft age and college players having to stay 2 years instead of 1. NBA also wants to increase salaries in the D-League to avoid having the talent go overseas after summer league or training camp cuts.

Yeah I meant the 23rd pick. I was thinking that guy might get sent down and two others that qualify that are still on the 15 man roster. The rest could be guys that the Jazz would like to have play in their system and if an injury or trade occurred could be called up and would know the system. I know this would apply to the rest of the league that is not on an affilated contract.

K Murphy does look like he put on some muscle since Jazz.
Maybe he might be worth looking at again.

I think it all depends on who we draft at 23. If someone like Hood is there, and if we don't get an SF with the first puck, he is probably ready to contribute as is.

This could be great for players like E. Murphy, Clark, and future ones like them. Get them some good burn during the periods where they would just sit.jazz need to acquire a lot of 3&D's for when we finally make it back to the playoffs. This will be a good way to keep those guys fresh during the regular season, w/o messing w/ the development of our core players.

Except it doesn't work that way. It's not a minor league team where all the players belong to the NBA team. Any players assigned still count against the 15-man roster. The remaining players on the D-League team, even if it is a single-team affiliate, have contracts with the D-League, not the parent team and can be signed by any NBA team during the season (like we did with Garrett).

So yes, you could have a bunch of players with the Idaho Stampede learning the Jazz' system. But the Jazz would only retain the rights to two of them - and only if they were on the 15-man roster and had been sent down. The rest could leave if/when another NBA wanted them on their roster. On the other hand, you would have kind of an advanced summer league where FA's are learning the offense/defense and would get a 10-day contract if something happened with the Jazz (injury, trade, etc.).
