What's new

why so many of you giving up on Burke? He is our future PG, period!

These highlights show Burke getting to the rim, hitting clutch shots, and making plays.

I've watched about 10 or 12 games on Synergy today and Trey isn't lighting quick but he can get to the rim. He's a PNR guard so he's not attacking full speed he's reading and making defense commit then he makes his decision to pass it to the pick man, stop for a mid range jumper, take it to the hoop, kick it out on the perimeter or reset the offense. He'll never be Russell Westbrook, Derrick Rose, John Wall, or Jeff Teague and put insane pressure on a teams interior defense with his physical gifts. However that doesn't limit his ceiling as I've pointed out before neither does Chris Paul, Steve Nash, or Step Curry and all those guys are doing just fine. Those three either was, is, or in line to be the games best PG.

And we're gonna ignore the tape watching, time spent with an actual coach developing, and practicing with players at a higher level than college as something that doesn't matter at all?
Welcome to Jazzfanz.

These are the type of games I expect from Burke regularly as early as next season.

You guys have a good one with some serious potential to be special. Don't fall victim to the grass is greener syndrome.

Burke is going to have to figure out how to either score more effectively off the bounce or score more consistently spotting up to keep defenses honest. He'll have to do a lot better defensively as well. A few stats to consider:

Field Goal Percentage by Shot Area
Restricted Area: .490
In The Paint (Non-RA): .356
Mid-Range: .388

Player Tracking
FG% on Drives: .372
eFG% on Pull Ups: .377

Synergy Sports
Isos: .81 own PPP; .93 opponent PPP
P&R Ball Handler: .72 own PPP; .82 opponent PPP
Spot-Up: .95 own PPP; 1.22 opponent PPP

He needs to get better. Hopefully he makes a jump similar to the one he made between Year 1 and Year 2 at Michigan.

I hate the fastbreak at :33

How is he not dumping that off to Burks once Gasol commits? Seems like such a routine, easy pass to me, but one Burke decides to take himself.

Or the very next play he has Jefferson with space in the corner, who was one of the best 3pt shooters in the league this past year.

Certainly he has to get better. Again I expect that to happen simply because his finger should be completely healed all season. Especially defensely, but with him the problem seems to be technique and effort more than it's a lack of foot speed.

I definitely see the issues with Burke and those issues are real. However I think most are overstated and most are correctable.

I dont think we can count him in or out yet. You have to build a championship team from the ground up. I am not saying that he is a guy you can or can't count on, but you have to start from somewhere and there aren't exactly a lot of good guards lining up to play in Utah. You have to think about what the players want. If you had options to play almost anywhere in America, would you want to play in Utah? We have to take what we can and try to build around it. I think Burke is a good starting point that we can add the pieces we need to and build around.

Yes. A coach who blames you and throws you under the bus for injuries and HIS inept job. Tape watching and practice is all good, but you need PLAYING time.

That's totally all that's happened in the last three years. Totally! Ty was the only coach on the staff, Kanter never went to workout with Karl Malone and Kiki Vanderwghe, didn't have the chance to learn offensive moves from Big Al..

I'm not saying Kanter is going to transform into an all-star next season. But he will improve. Maybe he IS a bust. In that case, Lindsey should draft Vonleh. However, from what I've seen, Kanter has some very good interior moves and is a good offensive rebounder. Burke? I've seen him shoot bricks and be ineffective trying to get inside. Oh yeah, but he DID have one game-winner so he gets a complete pass for his otherwise horrible shooting. Seriously, Burke will also get better. But he's ALWAYS going to have physical limitations. Deron wasn't the fastest guy, but he was big and could outmuscle other PG's. However in the this league when you're slow AND small, it just doesn't bode well for success.

I'm not wasting any more time on the guy. I'd borderline shop Kanter at this point.

I'm never quite sure what Core4 means when he says Ty threw Kanter under the bus.

Also, this obsession with physical tools is ridiculous. Kanter has decent footwork and touch, and has shown he can grab offensive boards. His feel for the game is terrible. Burke, on the other hand, is a basketball player. His improvement from Year 1 to Year 2 at Michigan is evidence that he knows what he should be working on to improve his game (this also applies to his team's improvement over the same time period). Kanter has shown that he can improve his pecs and abs, and post pics on instagram.

He had only 1 post move coming to league and that was Up and Under. To say he did not improve his game is absurd.

Let's see...blaming him for the 1-14 start by benching him. Why not see what the team can do once you replace JLIII and Tinsley with some NBA-quality PG's (or at least close to NBA-quality)? Then the Jazz FO and Locke keep piling on by repeating the "1 for X as starter stat" without even ATTEMPTING to mitigate by acknowledging ANY team is weaker when they lose a starter.

Instead, why not call out Hayward for his 39%/29% shooting during the same period. Jefferson shot under 40% in November. But not once did we hear the Jazz are losing because of those guys. Instead, it was all put on Kanter. Ty needed a scapegoat and he chose Enes.

1. Given how much more effective lineups featuring Favors-Marvin or Kanter-Evans were than lineups featuring Favors-Kanter, even if you include Burke in those lineups and/or only consider games after Burke returned from injury, the simplest explanation for Kanter's move to the bench is that it gave the Jazz a better chance to win games. Corbin is not obligated to stick with certain lineups because some fans or media members might say or think things that could hurt his players' feelings.

2. Ty is not responsible for what Locke says. You should probably also consider the possibility that what Locke says makes sense, and the Favors-Kanter simply wasn't working and that Kanter wasn't ready to compete against NBA starters.

OP thinks that Trey Burke is better than Dante Exum LOL
