What's new

Jazz acquire Novak from Raptors

Yes, that WAS a miracle that we actually dumped Memo AND got a second round pick in return, but second round picks are not that valuable. What's really pathetic is that Toronto just screwed us just now about as bad as we screwed the Nets in that trade. At least Memo was on 10 mil expiring contract, and there was no commitment beyond one year. We are taking on 7 mil, but over two years, which is worse. Also Memo at least had a chance of being a decent player had he recovered. Novak has been a 12th man on a bad team for some time.

And for what - a second round pick? Toronto just had their way with DL, just like we did with Nets a few years back. Does not feel good to be on the receiving end.

It was consensual.

Tor wanted to shed salary and DL saw an opportunity to obtain a situational 3 pt bomber for nothing. This might have been a Snyder move as well since isn't he supposedly eager to run and gun and shoot 3s? I remember that being his staple at Mizzou with Kareem Rush. It has also become SA's style too.

Floor spacing 3-pt specialist for basically a scrub? Sounds like working my magic on the NBA2K games. Very good pickup for the Jazz, if some can't see that you don't understand basketball. Dead-eye long range shooters are not easy to come by and like SA proved, can tip the tide in a game or series.

Excellent move by DL and company.

Exactly. Jazz have talked for years about wanting shooters, but not actually getting them. Good to see DL go for one. And guys like Garrret are a dime a dozen.

My goodness people...

We got a 3 pt specialist who can play beautifully in situations for nothing. Garrett is a dime a dozen 3rd stringer. We could easily replace him with a call to UVU's Ronnie Price... Assuming he still plays basketball . Even if he didn't, just bring up some D leaguer. So relax and stop acting like we just traded away Lebron.

Lastly, are you idiots insane? Playing Bonner helped SA tip the scales against OKC. SITUATIONS and MATCHUPS. I know it's difficult for some of you to understand. But for the rest of us who understand basketball, we get it. Not every player is going to be a 20 pt iso player or lockdown defender. Using the logic I've seen in some of these posts here, we wouldn't ever be able to fill in a roster because "x player doesn't defend."

Novak can play a vital role in floor spacing, 4 qtr shooting, and bench scoring. Relax, I doubt he'll have a bigger role than The Red Rocket from SA.

DL is bringing in his SA experience here. He's surrounding us with good athletes and 3 pt bombers. Now hopefully some of the crap drafted by KOC forms into our own Big 3.

It just wouldn't be jazzfanz if folks weren't freaking out and bitching about every move no matter how small it is.

Do people realize we're talking about 3.5 million for the next two years? Why so much melodrama and bemoaning as if this were a significant cap hit preventing us from other moves?

There's no way hes as good as Jeremy Evans at this point, its not even close.

Maybe not, but some talents are needed more than others, which will make Novak more valuable and receive more minutes on this squad.

For someone who shoots such a high percentage, hes actually a bit streaky, When Steve is hot, he really gets hot though, Hes a "microwave" type of player, meaning he only needs to make 1 or 2 shots in a row to get really zoned in.

So I guess when he's cold then he's about on par with a Marvin "the stretch 4" Williams who's hot.

I agree - watch the following video:

Novak's shooting is far from streaky - it is cold blood calculation and predictability on his part, and it is so calculated and predictable that most defenders can't do nothing to stop it. Do we have anyone on the team that is even close to being able to do that? No... Novak shoot the ball knowing it is going in, other current Jazz players shoot and hope it goes in. Novak introduce a vital ability to this team at a low price, low maintenance.

Great deal by DL!

True, but the difference gets paid out to the players on the roster. WE get a 2nd and Novak is a guy who can even be traded again to a contender who needs some 3-pt shooting this year or next. It's a "meh' move, but like someone else pointed out, you never know when a 2nd is going to find another Millsap, be combined to move up, or just be that asset that has to be given up by the Jazz for another trade to happen.
I just pointed it out because I am repeatedly seeing posts on here stating the they have to get to the salary floor. And that is simply untrue.
.
The move itself I like. I don't think he'll play much but he's a decent situational player that we got for nothing.

Its really not, they could have done better.

Ioannis Papapetrau is an UDFA this year that id prefer over Novak, hes also a set shot guy. he shot 48% from 3 in the euroleague this year, Ioannis would have cost more than your average UDFA but less than Novak certainly. hes 20 or 21 and has solid build to him, hes got some potential to do other things than shoot, hes passable in areas where Novak wasn't a factor in his prime.

I'd have much rather spent that $ on Tyler Honeycutt who in his early 20's athletic and proficient from 3 in Israel this last season he does plenty of other things well, too bad hes going to SL with the Heat.

Some are minimizing his salary because its relation to the cap. 3,750,000 could have be spent better for next season though, theres no doubt about that, just give it a week or 2 to see these contracts for context. I dont think Anthony Morrow is going to land some huge contract and hes much more serviceable than Steve.

The more I think about this the more i think that the 2nd rounder (do we know what year?) is the actual piece in this trade, which may have the most on court value. Novak is a great lockerroom guy i think thats a major part in this move too, theres probably some salary floor ramifications and they must like when his contract expires.

Now that the 2014 draft is done, the Jazz should start angling towards the 2017 Draft ASAP, It looks like they're ahead of the pack already. I do like these moves for the future drafts the Jazz have been making.

Well, the real question should be why does DL keep acquiring 2nd rounders when he obviously does not know what to do with them. Still can't fathom why we traded this years second when there was obvious 1st round talent on the board.
Too many young guys already. Might as well stash that for the future. And maybe they did not see real talent there.
