Should They Match?

So make Parsons a $11-12 million offer at midnight tonight, tell him he's got just under 3 days to accept it, and if he hasn't accepted it by then match Hayward. Would he really turn it down? Maybe, but he's very likely NOT going to have any more offers to consider this early in free agency since most other teams will be waiting around for Lebron & Co.

I agree but don't think 11-12M is enough to get it done. I'd go four years, 57M. That's 1.5M cheaper than Gordo's deal annually and I think enough that the Rockets wouldn't match if they get Bosh. Maybe I'm wrong though.

I get the feeling Parsons has a wink-wink deal with Houston as he does not seem to be seriously entertaining any other teams. I'm far more interested in Luol Deng's asking price at this point. It feels like it's lower than Haywards.

Great post on all accounts.
Yes, I agree Parsons likely has agreed with Houston on a contract amount. He could pull a Boozer, but the difference is he's a RFA so it's not certain he could get away, even if he wanted.

Deng is a good option. Haven't really heard much about him in connection with other teams. And BTW, Carroll is an UFA next year. Don't discount him wanting to join Snyder. Certainly not a great shooter, but he's 10x the leader Hayward is just by his effort on the court.

I'd rather is risking not matching and waiting for a true max player to emerge than become a treadmill team

Doesn't matter quinsnydershair. If there aren't any other options then wait. Overpaying is never smart. Look at Kendrick Perkins or josh smith with detroit. The thunder had a need at center and jumped the gun.

I know you're way down on Hayward and don't want them to match. We'll just have to agree to disagree. As for Carroll, I really hope that the Jazz bring him back. I thought that it was borderline negligence to have him leave for the contract that he signed with Atlanta. He really enjoyed being in Utah and was worth that (and more) just for his hustle and attitude. For what it's worth, I think that I'd try to get him back this year via trade if possible. I definitely want the Junkyard Dog back in SLC, even if they match Hayward's offer sheet.

Carroll is a starter in Atlanta. So how do you match Hayward and also bring back DeMarre?
I guess if you continue to have GH be a SG. But Burks is going to want the first Path train out of town if he isn't a starter.

1) The penalty for not spending to the floor is basically non-existent. It just means that the guys on the roster get extra money (that no one has used this as a tactic to give max guys extra is honestly a little surprising at this point). In that sense, the Jazz don't "have" to do anything.

Interesting thought. However, I've never seen details on how the money is divided among the guys on the roster. Divided evenly? Divided in proportion to their salaries? Other? It may well be that there is a clause saying that moneys given to players that way can't be used to exceed the max.

Here's the only stuff I found on Larry Coon's site:

https://www.cbafaq.com/salarycap.htm#Q15
If a team doesn't meet its minimum payroll it is surcharged at the end of the season for the shortfall. That money is distributed among the players on that team.

So again, no details.

However much I hate to max out a player who would be the 5th or 6th best player on a "contender" I don't think the Jazz have an option and under the current circumstances / rebuild mode / small market / state of the NBA etc. We should and will match the offer. Ouch.

Other than Hayward, Parsons, Deng, and our own Wet Bandit, who are other free agent options at the 3?

Unrestricted / Small Forward / 6-8 / 2013-14 team: New York
27.4 ppg, 8.1 rpg
With some years left in his prime, Melo will draw massive attention should he decide to leave New York – which is looking like a feasible scenario with the way things have gone at the Big Apple.

Unrestricted / Small Forward / 6-8 / 2013-14 team: Cleveland

These are the only ones I would want to pursue (if we have to, bla bla bla, yada yada yada)

Deng - 1-
Parsons 1b -
Hayward - if they choose to match
Ariza - 2
Williams - 3
Garcia - Only if JLIII comes back. I really want to see them reunited.

you give a max deal to a perennial all star. so my answer is hell-friggin-naw

i hate overpaying dudes. not in football, not in baseball, and not in basketball.

It would be a mistake to match this offer. Jazz are not going to contend in next 3-4 years. Hayward is not a missing piece to championship, nor is he a player to build the team around. This is the time to stockpile assets and get difference makers through the draft. With MAX contract Hayward is not an asset, but a liability. He cannot be traded and will occupy CAP space which can be traded for picks.

Good post, especially...... Hayward is not a missing piece to championship, nor is he a player to build the team around.
