What's new

Stockpiling 2nds and time to spend

Right now we have the following future picks:

2015: Jazz' 1st and 2nd
2016: Jazz' 1st, Jazz' 2nd, Warriors' 2nd, Boston or Toronto's 2nd
2017: Jazz' 1st, Warriors' 1st, Jazz' 2nd, Warriors' 2nd, Knicks' 2nd
2018: Jazz' 1st, Jazz 2nd, Knicks' 2nd

+ the one acquired in this current trade (I still don't know for what year it is. Possibly 2015).

So in the next 4 years we have possibly 5 first round selections and 10 second round picks.

Watching the Cavs and Wolves dance around a deal for Kevin Love, I'm secretly hoping that the Jazz will try to get into the mix as well. Everyone seems focused on trying to acquire Love out of that deal, but there's no way he re-signs with Utah and I'm wondering if an opportunity might not be opening up to get Andrew Wiggins instead.

Minnesota has been ambivalent about trading Love at all, but there's going to come a point that a deal will happen. He wants out and he's going to get it. The Timberwolves seem to want Klay Thompson, but I don't think Golden State adds him to the package and the Wolves have reportedly been willing to settle for Andrew Wiggins, Anthony Bennett and a 1st round pick. They also reportedly want to get rid of the contracts for Kevin Martin and J. J. Berea as well, clearing out more than $24 million in guaranteed money.

It may not gain any traction, but if I were DL, I'd offer to kick in Enes Kanter, Trey Burke and a bunch of future draft picks to get Wiggins out of the deal. I'd also take on Kevin Martin and then look to talk another team into taking Barea in exchange for some of those 2nd round picks. . .

Minnesota gets - Anthony Bennett, Enes Kanter, Trey Burke, Cleveland's future 1st round pick, multiple 1st round picks from Utah (including likely at least one unprotected pick) and the cash and cap space from getting rid of Martin and Berea.

Cleveland gets - Kevin Love.

Utah gets Andrew Wiggins and Kevin Martin, plus they still have a bunch of draft picks left over for filling out the bench down the road.

I'm not sure if it's enough to get Minnesota to bite, but I'd certainly put the idea out there. Of all the young Core players, Kanter and Burke seem likely to be the odd ones out. I'm actually a pretty big fan of both guys, but I'd gladly ship them out (plus picks) for Wiggins. Minnesota might not go for it, but they also might not be as high on Wiggins as pundits and fans are. If presented with another possibility that meets two needs (veteran players with potential and quality draft picks to rebuild with) there might be a chance that they could go for it. Won't know if they don't try though. It's costly, and a lot more than I'd like to pay, but it might be exactly the opening that the Jazz have been compiling those assets for.

Starting lineup of Gobert, Favors, Wiggins, Hayward and Exum. Helluva defensive lineup, but not sure how they fit on offense. I'd make the deal expecting Wiggins and Exum to develop into your #1 and #2 options with Hayward, Favors, Burks, Martin and Hood providing support. Even with Booker, Novak and Evans, the Jazz would be a little bit light at the 4 spot and completely weak after Exum at PG, but maybe they'd bring Neto and Tomic over for depth purposes.

Jazz would instantly become media darlings if they could parlay the tank into Wiggins and Exum, even if it costs them an arm and a leg to pull it off.

Very good trade idea.

Seems pretty fair for everyone involved imo.

I would do if i were jazz.

Some Jazz 2nd round picks:
1993 Bryon Russell
1996 Shandon Anderson
2001 Jarron Collins
2003 Mo Williams
2005 C.J. Miles
2006 Paul Millsap
2008 Ante Tomic
2010 Jeremy Evans

Really. Really. Tomic was a great pick?? He's never. Never played a single game. I've never understood the love for this dude. Get it through your incredibly thick skulls.... He's never coming over to the nba. Never!

He's a lot better basketball player than the vast majority of 2nd round picks, though.

A PG who can't shoot and a PF who can't defend for a potential franchise player. Yep, why WOULDN'T Minnesota JUMP at the chance to add fringe players to their team, including one who is coming off his rookie deal.

Oh so you though that they only get burke and kanter in the deal.
Nope

Minny gets 3 players picked in the lottery, plus 3 or 4 first round picks, (at least one of them being an unprotected lottery pick) and get to dump some bad contracts for cap space.

All for a player that cant get them to the playoffs.

Sounds like a better haul than the jazz got from nj (d will had taken jazz to multiple playoffs, even wcf) and also a better deal than denver got for melo.

Hell, we get wiggins and give up burke, kanter, 2 or 3 firsts and have to take on crappy contracts. Thats alot to give up for a player that has done absolutely nothing. Seems like more than the rumored pre draft deal being discussed between jazz and cleveland. (Favors, #5 and 23 for wiggins)

And to top it off, minnisota knows that there is a chance than they lose love for nothing in the end.

This should be good.. Why is he better then most second round picks?

Well for starters he won the Euroleague MVP...

(I'm genuinely confused about the Tomic hate around here)

He plays 40 minute games, so he only averaged 20-22 mins per contest, but he scores 10-11 points per on well over 60% shooting, He shoots that % in a league which allows defenders to camp out in the lane on defense.

I hope Tomic sticks around to play with Dario Saric and Mario Hezonja on the Croatian National team.

Go find Tomic's salary... seriously... Thats why hes not on the Jazz, its certainly not his lack of skill...

Name the Centers in Europe that are better, I dare ya.

Euroleague MVP means nothing to me, and doesn't mean he can handle nba level. He would be the Jeremy Evans of the C position. He will get over powered by centers and he's too slow to guard most 4's and stretch 4's. I don't want to see this lurch of a player take minutes from Kanter and Gobert, besides, why in the hell would he come over now? He's now an MVP in Europe and been there for I think 7 years why would he come here for less money and a lesser role?

You guys seem to live in some kind of wonderland that he's going to come over, and if he does, it probably wouldn't happen till his mid to late 30's. It's fine though keep telling yourself he's coming.
