On Locke podcast today:

Dante regarding playing off/on the ball

"It's all about being adaptable. That's what I tried to take into my game. I tried to get back on the ball as much as possible when I can. But you know I can't get into an NBA team and kinda demand to do what I want (i.e., playing on the ball). So it's just a process of trying to start to slowly get the ball and earn the trust of the guys."

So now we know.

DANTE WANTS THE BALL!!!!

I have zero problem with this. I'm glad he wants the ball. I'm also glad he's not (yet) an entitled little **** that hogged it in SL. Hopefully he'll learn how to play off the ball well, Quin's system and become a true team stud.

I love that quote. I love that he wants the ball and I love that he understands that he has to earn it, rather than expect it to happen from day 1. He seems really mature and very determined to succeed... can't wait for the season to start to see how it all plays out...

I want the best player on the team with the best passing skills to always have the ball. Good for Exum.

his bb iq is off the chart... he is still 19 years old. I love his attitude as well. We have our future baby

I love the attitude but I also worry that it will become a problem. Right now, Dante needs to improve his conditioning before he gets the ball more. Kid was sucking air. He needs to bulk up too. The NBA is a man's game and he is going to need some muscle when he goes to the basket.

It is definitely going to become a problem. Either trey and/or dante is going to get upset. I guess it's just a matter of when and if we take care of it (trade trey) before value is lost.

Honestly though, Dante fully expects to be on the ball and the lead guard for whatever team he plays on. His agent will ensure it one way or the other. I mean a national tv campaign was built around him speaking of him being a PG. The Jazz need to be smart and use trey until the teeter starts to totter and then ship him out.

My gut tells me you're right. A lot of people here have said it is going to become an issue and based on what we perceive as their personalities, I can't help but think this is true. That said, I think great coaching can overcome this potential issue. There is no reason Exum and Burke can't both be on the court at the same time. Obviously, they each won't have it in their hands as much but they won't have to co-exist on the court for all 30 minutes (hypothetically) a night. I think there would be about 20 minutes of playing together and another 10 minutes during which they could singularly run the point without the other being on the court, hovering over the other's shoulder. Both situations would be great for their development.

I also think that Quin's not blowing smoke up our asses when he says they could compliment each other very well so them being on the court together could really help imo. Exum's ability to slash may help Burke find open looks on the perimeter that he otherwise has trouble getting. Burke's ability to drive, to a lesser degree, may also help Exum get open looks which will help since he'll likely need them since his shot pretty much stinks. Add in Burks and Hayward and we have a lot of solid enough ball handlers who should be able to penetrate enough to find open looks for whoever is sitting in the corner or elsewhere on the perimeter. Hayward, Burks, Hood, Burke. Dare I say Kanter. A lot of interesting possibilities. Quin just has to get them to buy in. Only time will tell if they do and if the results are what we desire.
