On Locke podcast today:

Dante regarding playing off/on the ball

"It's all about being adaptable. That's what I tried to take into my game. I tried to get back on the ball as much as possible when I can. But you know I can't get into an NBA team and kinda demand to do what I want (i.e., playing on the ball). So it's just a process of trying to start to slowly get the ball and earn the trust of the guys."

So now we know.

DANTE WANTS THE BALL!!!!

I have zero problem with this. I'm glad he wants the ball. I'm also glad he's not (yet) an entitled little **** that hogged it in SL. Hopefully he'll learn how to play off the ball well, Quin's system and become a true team stud.

I love that quote. I love that he wants the ball and I love that he understands that he has to earn it, rather than expect it to happen from day 1. He seems really mature and very determined to succeed... can't wait for the season to start to see how it all plays out...

I want the best player on the team with the best passing skills to always have the ball. Good for Exum.

his bb iq is off the chart... he is still 19 years old. I love his attitude as well. We have our future baby

I love the attitude but I also worry that it will become a problem. Right now, Dante needs to improve his conditioning before he gets the ball more. Kid was sucking air. He needs to bulk up too. The NBA is a man's game and he is going to need some muscle when he goes to the basket.

It is definitely going to become a problem. Either trey and/or dante is going to get upset. I guess it's just a matter of when and if we take care of it (trade trey) before value is lost.

Honestly though, Dante fully expects to be on the ball and the lead guard for whatever team he plays on. His agent will ensure it one way or the other. I mean a national tv campaign was built around him speaking of him being a PG. The Jazz need to be smart and use trey until the teeter starts to totter and then ship him out.

My gut tells me you're right. A lot of people here have said it is going to become an issue and based on what we perceive as their personalities, I can't help but think this is true. That said, I think great coaching can overcome this potential issue. There is no reason Exum and Burke can't both be on the court at the same time. Obviously, they each won't have it in their hands as much but they won't have to co-exist on the court for all 30 minutes (hypothetically) a night. I think there would be about 20 minutes of playing together and another 10 minutes during which they could singularly run the point without the other being on the court, hovering over the other's shoulder. Both situations would be great for their development.

I also think that Quin's not blowing smoke up our asses when he says they could compliment each other very well so them being on the court together could really help imo. Exum's ability to slash may help Burke find open looks on the perimeter that he otherwise has trouble getting. Burke's ability to drive, to a lesser degree, may also help Exum get open looks which will help since he'll likely need them since his shot pretty much stinks. Add in Burks and Hayward and we have a lot of solid enough ball handlers who should be able to penetrate enough to find open looks for whoever is sitting in the corner or elsewhere on the perimeter. Hayward, Burks, Hood, Burke. Dare I say Kanter. A lot of interesting possibilities. Quin just has to get them to buy in. Only time will tell if they do and if the results are what we desire.

Dante's arms are too long to bring the ball up. Let Trey handle that grunt work and then pass it off to the 2 guard.

This.

I like many things about the kid but he doesn't seem much reliable at certain things. Like he said himself, he will have to earn the things he want.

At this point, with his current shaky dribbling I can see him having a lot of trouble bringing the ball up against ultra quick NBA guards. We could still give him a chance from the beginning if we don't care about winning much, but it could back fire with him having problems and too many turnovers and losing a bit of his confidence.

The long arms thing is an issue now but it's a fixable issue. Livingston, Magic Johnson, Derek Harper, and so forth, are guys with long arms that were/are able to be point guards in this league. Yes, Livingston who was finally healthy and able to play really well last year.

Which bears Exum's strength issues in my opinion. Although he has shaky dribbling, to me, his lack of strength is more of a factor at him being stuck against the full court pressure for instance. From what I have seen from his videos so far, he just can't back down any guard with his dribbling while bringing the ball up.

But, going into man-hood from being a 19 years old skinny kid and gaining some strength could really help about it.

I fully agree. I also think gained strength would help him with a shorter, quicker, stronger dribble.

Holy crap. Not a big deal at all. IF Exum was ready to play 20-30 mins a night, then it is a problem Dante and Burke won't even be playing much together at all. Exum could barely get through the second quarter of SL, with 10 min quarters. What makes you think he will be able to play 25 mins in the NBA?

Trey will start at PG. Exum will back him up. This isn't an issue until next year, at the earliest.

Yep.
It is VERY rare for nba teams to press, making it easy to bring the ball up.

I remember AK bringing the ball up without problem.
I have seen Gordon do it as well.
Burks played point guard a couple years ago too

Been saying this since we've drafted Dante, except you and I both know, that is the last thing Trey wants to do knowing his personality and all.
