Utah Jazz: #5 in Youth Talent

The top part goes like this:

1. Pelicans
2. Suns
3. Raptors
4. Hornets

I think Utah's young roster is still underrated and I find this a positive thing. It can help players pump themselves up to make a point in the league with the right motivations flowing through the right coaching system. This season can be a change of air for those folks to prove the league that they still have a long way to go on the road to their ceilings and the rate of success as a team. And Pelicans leading the rankings is no wonder a result of the presence of AD23- a legit future MVP. I can see a lot of good things happening this season, or the young core getting divided by underachievement, losing its 2 or 3 pieces at the end of this one.

If Exum is who we think he is, we should be squarely behind New Orleans.

Pelicans are the clear-cut #1.

If Exum is who we think he is, and what he thinks he is, not what we think he was in summer league, and what he hopefully could be, we be #1..:)

Jazz should be ranked number two and they would be number one if News Orleans didn't have Anthony Davis. He makes them #1 all by himself.

Without looking, I want to try to guess the four teams ahead of them.

Philly, Milwaukee, Orlando, Minnesota (assuming they have gotten Wiggins and Bennett), aaaaaaaand...I don't know. I can't think of a fifth...Portland?

You should have peeked.

I can see that but I'd rather have the youth that the jazz have. We have depth at every position. N.O has some big question marks and have made some stupid decisions. Gordon's knee, drafting Rivers, Signing Evans (what position), trading Lopez (for Evans) to give up a 1st for Omer, no SF, and the Holiday trade (noel, 11th pick) looks questionable.

As a Pelicans fan I agree. And I'd add that I think Anthony Davis is being vastly overrated. Good player with some raw ability to be really good, but he is far to average to below average at too many areas of the game to think he'll ever be on the same level as the better player in the league. I watch him all the time as a Pelicans fan and I just don't get the insane hype.

I agree to this. But I saw a lot of potential in him, youth and willingness. And less superstar spoiledness.

How do you see him side by side to Aşık?

21 and 10 on 52% FGs, 26.54 PER, league leader in blocked shots at age 20. To each his own, imo, hard to overrate that.

Numbers IMO aren't a good barometer for overall greatness. You have to take into consideration what the team does and who else is on the team. Most NBA players can score if an offense is tailored to them and they don't have to really share the ball with other talented players looking to score. We were a terrible rebounding team that were without much of the scoring power we thought we would have due to injuries.

Davis is a player that was just in the prefect situation (a lot of that is his own talent) to be efficient. He's long and has good IQ and feel for the game so he gets a solid number of steals and a insane number of blocks. PER is friendly to those kind of measurable defensives stats. However Davis is a below average post and perimeter defender there's no stat to reflex that. On offense he's more of a PNR option than he is as an iso option. Decent face up, sub par post game, and below average jump shooter. He doesn't have great feet so the majority of the time when he's aggressive with the ball he ends up with an off balance shot when facing up or working out of the post. He's been able to some what off set his lack of coordination with his quick 1st step and great touch near the basket. Again he's good and when you have that much physical talent it's hard to really say what his overall potential is, but I don't recall players with poor coordination becoming greatly skilled offensively.

AD is a stud. However, I think Utah will jump in the ratings once Quin unleashes Hood, Gobert, Burks and Exum on teams and restores Hayward's game and confidence. Burke is likely dragging our ratings down. Replace him with Neto and we're easily #2 (sarcasm alert on that last line).

Seriously, who knows? Philadelphia could easily be #1.

Asik is a great complement to Davis defensively. Davis weakness is in the post and that Asik strength. Omer will allow Anthony to roam on defensive and help him avoid banging against more physical guys. I expect a significant dip in Davis' rebounding as Asik is great there as well and the 2nd best rebounder on the team last year was our SF Aminu.

The concern is offensively. Davis is an OK jumpshooter, but most of his damage is done in the PNR as the roll man. Asik can't shot and won't force anybody out of the paint. Davis is have to get much more consistent with his jumper if he wants to see anywhere near the same numbers offensively. Which is just naturally likely to dip if guys stay healthy. All reports is Anthony is trying to add a corner 3 to his game. He'll need it when he's on the floor with Asik.
