There was no need to get to the floor, and no need for Novak. Why let him eat up nearly $4mm in 2015 cap space for a 2nd? It was a bad trade (FWIW, I thought so at the time).
Valid point on RFAs and offer sheets. Still, if the Jazz don't get an offer sheet signed, they could always keep Kanter. Also, since this Kanter mess has reportedly been brewing for a while, it makes sense to wonder what the Jazz could have acquired for Kanter earlier in the season or this past offseason. DL has a pretty consistent record of waiting to do anything until his hand is forced. Not a great sign.
