What's new

You're the GM this offseason. What do you do?

"Letting Favors go" only makes sense if we get a guy worth paying more than $20 million (Tobias, Kemba, Russell, Randle, etc.). If we can't find that guy, we gotta keep Favors.
So we can talk about how Favors and Gobert doesn’t work for the 6th consecutive year, or so we can have the honor of paying $18 million for a backup?

I don't want to pay him $18 million, but I also don't want to lose him for a lateral move. I firmly believe that waiving Favors will leave him unclaimed. At that point, we re-sign him for something less per year but more long term. If nobody picks him up as an $18 million expiring, then I'm sure offering him 3 years $36 million is quite fair.

Can we get Jerry West drunk and do a sign and trade of Beverley for Exum? That would solve so many problems and, ironically, provide a lot of that “flexibility” the FO has been looking for.

Why do we have to keep him? He had the best year of his career and we still lost in the first round in only 5 games and his minutes went down to just below 20 a game in that series. He's a great player but having to play him minutes at power forward hurts our team. If we had him on a reasonable deal to strictly be our backup center then sure lets keep him forever. Paying a guy that doesn't fit next to your best player $18 million to essentially be a backup just doesn't cut it. A more aggressive GM would have cut the cord with Favors 2 or 3 years ago.

You go into a bar with Jerry West he’s leaving with your stars, your first round picks, yo kids and wife... don’t call him and don’t return his calls.

Our entire system is based around a good, defensive center. If we let Favors walk and Gobert gets injured, we are screwed. Are we really going to rely on Bradley? If we let Favors walk, we have to go out and get a reliable backup C anyways. With Favors, we will sleep soundly knowing that we aren't relying on one C or everything could fall apart.

Like I've said 100 times, I don't want to bring Favors back at $18. I would let Favors go in a second for a Tobias or Kemba. However, in the event we don't get a $20+ million quality player (which is 99% chance based on our history), then we have to find a way to keep Favors.

Favors is more than just a back up C. He can play some PF. MOST IMPORTANTLY, his style at C is different than Gobert's and sometimes you need a different style C if the playoff opponent forces changes.

Different style but too many critical shared weaknesses... neither can shoot neither can dribble or create.

Team is worse when we play him at PF... so we pay a “tax” for those great backup minutes. Then the cap allocation “tax”.... we know he isn’t a trade asset on 18M per year expiring...

Even if we got him to come back after waiving him I’d want it to be clear he isn’t a starter. I also don’t think he’s super excited to come back making less than before we waived him... I think we have as much shot at finding a 20M plus player that getting a guy to come back like that...

Just my .02

What your saying all makes sense. Just let me clarify my thinking:

- if we can't find a massive $20+ per year player
- if he clears waivers (I think he easily would)
- if he wants to come back (he says he does)
- if he is fine not being an every game starter (he should understand that if he wants to come back)
- if he is re-signed to around $12 per year on a few year contract

I want Favors back. We need a good backup C. We need to prolong Gobert's career by giving him some games off and less minutes.

Austin Rivers - 26 years old. He hit 16 three pointers this post season against the Jazz and GS on 45% shooting! He only signed a 1 year contract with the Rockets, so as far as I can see he's up for grabs this year! I say SIGN THIS BOY...and do it NOW! He'll come cheap and might have turned the corner on his 3 point shooting and could be a big time contributor for us, especially being surrounded by our big guys which should give him even more wide open looks from 3 point land! Keep Rubio and add Rivers and we have a recipe for about 55-60 wins, home court advantage and a trip to the Finals!

What does that mean; "He's meant too much to them."? He was good when the Jazz weren't, was injured when the Jazz were good, then got healthy enough to play 23 MPG, virtually never close games, and still not fit as a 4 (virtually unplayable there against the best teams).

LET. ****ING. GO.

But according to DL "Derrick Favors isn't part of the problem, he's part of the solution".

When one of your most important players goes down, you're screwed. That's how it works.

Doesn't have to be.

If we lose out on free agents, we have to make up for that by having some of the best depth in the NBA. We need to keep Favors, add another great -$20 player or 2 $10 specialist types, hope we kill it on our draft pick, and rely on our youth getting much better (Donovan, Royce, Grayson, Dante).
