What's new

You're the GM this offseason. What do you do?

Hi.

I’ve been thinking about a strategy about the Jazz signing the most-tenured, borderline NBA players so that their vet-minimum is substantial, and then down the road, they could be salary for a mid-season trade. I’ll do a deeper dive on this later, but a player like Jose Calderon might be an example.

As part of that plan, if you can trade Exum and whatever other salary for Marvin Williams, you could later trade Marvin Williams and whatever salary for, say Gallinari.

Anyway, goonight
For players with 10+ years of experience the vet min salary is the same - 2.56M. But you don't really need that. Exum's salary is 9.6M and Marvin Williams' salary is 15M. All you need to do is get to 10M of outgoing value in order to make the trade for Marvin. Gallinari's salary is 22.62M... you need to get to 17.62M of salary in order to trade for Gallinari. So 1 vet min contract won't do it. You will need 2...

Yep. Except incoming salaries need to be 125% or less, not 150% (so you’d need 12m to match on Marv as oppose to 10m).

Is the maximum number of players 15 plus 2 two-ways? Cuz the Jazz only have 11, currently. I can think of worse ways to fill out the roster on the court without even considering the salary ballast.

Another game-changing, high salary vet out there is Iguodala. Also someone decent on the Knicks will shake loose as their experiment will obviously go poorly.

? Why in the world would the Jazz sign him? He was simply awful when he played in summer league. Maybe a 2 way?
He was a star in Eurocup and had a decent rookie year in the Euroleague.

It's surprising to me as well though. Also a clear sign that JWF has no chance of making the team, though that was already pretty clear.

I like it. I thought he was an NBA player when we drafted him, even if he didn’t do super well in summer league. I bet this means two of the 2nd round guys are 2 way players this year

Hey everyone, im from Europe and Nigel Williams Goss sign with the Utah Jazz!!
Please help me to share the video with other Jazz fans in USA, Thanks!

Watching those highlights I remember that ugly over the shoulder floater he used to heave up. Statistically he's become a pretty good 3 point shooter, 37% in euroleauge and 40% in greek league, so that's good.

Sportando is saying we will be signing William Howard. He's been with our SL roster but has not played yet. I don't know what type of contract we will sign him to... or if it's just a camp invite or something.

Utah invested a $150k in his buyout. Teams don't usually do that for a SL or training camp invite. Pretty sure he'll be the 14th signing.

We pretty regularly give around 100K bonuses to camp invites. Last year we waived Bolomboy who had something like... 600K guaranteed on his contract. 150K is not a little but IMO it's possible he doesn't have a guaranteed spot and is rather a camp body for competition for those last 2 spots. The important thing here will be how many years the deal is and whether he has fully guaranteed 1st year(this is usually the hallmark of a player they are planning to keep - for example, O'Neale had similar contract - nobody knew who he was and all of a sudden they gave him 3 year contract with fully guaranteed 1st year. We should wait and see what his contract is like and draw some conclusions from it.

I think it would need to be a few years with some guaranteed money to get him to go. Difference between giving a bonus and actually buying out his contract, which the Jazz did the latter.
