What's new

The Candidacy of Ron DeSantis

Get your *** handed to you by Disney?
DeSantis is crushing Disney. There was huge win today for DeSantis. There are two cases currently, one in state court and one in Federal court. The Federal case was being proceeded over by a biased judge who HAAAAAAATES DeSantis. That biased judge was just removed from the case.

Yeah, education is in fine shape in Florida. I can’t imagine DeSantis’s culture war emphasis enjoying broad national appeal.

“By now, it’s obvious that the reactionary culture warriors who want to reshape American education are inspiring a serious liberal counter-mobilization in response. Remarkably, this backlash to the backlash is gaining momentum in some of the reddest parts of the country.

A raucous school board meeting in Hernando County, Fla., on Tuesday night captured what’s striking about this new phenomenon. The scene featured teachers pointedly declaring that right-wing attacks are driving them to quit, even as parents and students forcefully stood up on their behalf, demanding a halt to the hysteria.

“I have never seen such fear from my colleagues as I have seen in the last two months,” social studies teacher Victoria Hunt told the board.

The whole affair really put the culture-war-mongers to shame. Not that they’ll see it that way; as the meeting also showed, scenes like this — with maximum rage, fear, tension and suspicion surging between parents and educators — are precisely the outcome they want….

…...Meanwhile, Alyssa Marano, a math teacher who has resigned, rejected the oft-heard charge of LGBTQ indoctrination of students. “No one is teaching your kids to be gay,” she told the room. “Sometimes, they just are gay. I have math to teach. I literally don’t have time to teach your kids to be gay.”

Nearly 50 teachers are reportedly planning to resign in this school district. Lisa Masserio, president of the teachers union in Hernando County, says state laws and directives restricting educators are a key reason. She told us: “There is increased pressure and scrutiny on an already difficult job.”

At the meeting, right-wing parents and a minority of the school board amplified the usual attacks: Pornography in classrooms, indoctrination, wokeness. Watching them, it was impossible to avoid the sense that they were relishing every second of the tumult they’ve unleashed.…..

At the meeting, Shannon Rodriguez — a favorite of the right wing Moms for Liberty that led the attack on the Disney movie episode — kept robotically repeating phrases like “woke ideologies” and “woke agenda,” not even slightly disturbed by any sense of obligation to define their meaning. She proudly brandished her solidarity with boycotts of Bud Light and Disney as a badge of anti-woke heroism. Another conservative parent practically shouted, “You have awakened the entire alpha male blood of this country!”
I
But the real story of the night was the response. Again and again, parents and students forcefully defended teachers. They cast the right’s attacks, the censoring of educators and the removal of books as the real threats to education.

“War on woke?” one student said pointedly. “More like war on your children’s future.”

“It’s me and my fellow students who are feeling the effects of this,” said a second student. A third said the removal of books from classrooms is what’s really “indoctrinating students.”….

…..Just as a car wreck commands attention, the ugliness of right-wing culture-warring often transfixes the news media. But another story is beckoning: Ordinary parents everywhere and their elected representatives are responding, and declaring that they’ve had enough.

Do you know where Hernando county is? Because if you knew, you wouldn’t have posted this. This is a few left wing teachers teaching in a very red district. You’re trying to continuously create and feed everyone a narrative which is not true. You can’t even point to any banning of educational books or removal of black history in public schools. It’s just false.

There will be 50 people leave and there will be thousands of more people moving in. Because it’s a fast growing RURAL county. It’s about 1 hr from Tampa, with no traffic. Farm land everywhere. We have about 800 customers up in this area now because of the constant growth. It will probably grow 5% in the last 2 years. It’s a very red county.

IMG_2532.jpeg

Here is a story, just last year, from the Midwest that shows teachers are quitting because of left wing policies.

Why don’t you bring up this? Maybe it’s where people live and they don’t like the state/local politics. It’s like hearing the right wing people in California bitch all the time about their state government.

Yes, I can read, the article made that very clear:

“This county, north of Tampa, voted for Florida Gov. Ron DeSantisin 2022 by a 41-point margin. It’s where fifth-grade teacher Jenna Barbee recently enraged local enforcers of right-wing orthodoxy by showing her class “Strange World,” a Disney movie with an openly gay character. The Florida Department of Education is investigating whether she violated DeSantis’s “don’t say gay” law restricting classroom discussion of sex and gender.”

The DeSantis “war on Woke in education” is reactionary BS. It’s nothing less than the elevation of extreme ignorance. It’s part and parcel of the dumbing down of America. Right up there with Post Truth alternate realities, the Big Lie, and other asinine irrationalities swamping the West’s rational mind at this point in history. It’s DUMB, writ as large as DUMB gets….

Now, that’s how I see it. As part of a much larger movement, that seems to involve the elevation of extreme ignorance, be it rejection of scientists as “elites”, or removing an innocent poem from certain classes. I’m always looking for the bigger picture, IF I am able to discern it. And to me, that bigger picture is the explosion of irrational thought in the Western mind. If all this is something you cannot appreciate or understand, that’s not any kind of immediate problem for me, and I am not trying to convince you of anything.

Why don’t you bring up this? Maybe it’s where people live and they don’t like the state/local politics. It’s like hearing the right wing people in California bitch all the time about their state government.
"While the national teachers’ unions cite Republicans’ and parents’ “politicization” of the classroom as the reason for educators wanting to leave the field, Tony Kinnett with the Chalkboard Review discovered this is not what’s driving Midwestern educators out of their classrooms."

What’s a “left wing” teacher? Showing Disney is now considered left wing for RWers. The Overton window has shifted so much that anyone who isn’t in this MAGA cult is now considered “left wing.” At some pt, words need to matter. Not everyone and everything is “woke left wing woke Marxist woke leftist work socialist woke critical race theory woke grooming woke.”

What started out as a crusade to eradicate (non-existent) CRT has predictably opened up to eradicating anything RWers don’t like. Just admit that your party has no ideology or realistic ideas right now and all it has to keep its coalition together is resentment for X-boogeyman (college professors, Jews, blacks, LGBTs, basketball players, women, books, Ukraine, stores, chicken, the FBI, democracy, elections, vaccines, doctors, THE ELITES!, etc). Sadly, educators, books, and the LGBT community has proven to be helpful punching bags to those completely devoid of any decency or intelligence.

What’s the “don’t say gay law”? Show me a law that say this?

This is your fake narrative.

Again show me where educational books are being banned? Show me where black history is being removed. It’s all fear porn. You literally have no idea what’s going on here. None.

Yes some person complained about a Disney movie that was shown. I bet there would people who complain if there was a teacher who showed a Christ movie in school…

Or what about just Disney movies in general, not in Florida?

More fake narratives. Isolated incidents that you try to use to make it look bigger and scarier.

You tried to trash the Florida education system, yet you didn’t know that it’s thriving. You tried to post about a poem that was banned and it didn’t get banned. Now you’re trying to push a movie narrative. Keep trying because there is nothing there.

Yes the teachers union cite republicans and parents politics. Let see what they are up to…

Wow… 18% to politics and ONLY 9% to “representational activities”. Out of a $374 million budget. Focused more on politics than the teachers. I bet they are pretty neutral on political donations…

NOPE, 94% to Democrats. No wonder teachers unions blame everything on republicans and parents politics.

Oh so this is what the outrage in Florida is all about? Mayor Lightfoot teaching a course at Harvard? Seems like a weird thing for a school board and parents in Florida to be upset about. How many current students in Florida’s k-12 system will be impacted by Lightfoot’s course? How many in this district?
It’s the definition of a left wing teacher. You asked it. It’s a teacher which has left leaning political views. It’s an easy question to answer. What’s a right wing teacher? I bet you would love to sit in a classroom that has MAGA flags on the wall, red hat sitting on the desk and a large photo of Christ on the door. Then not ask what is a right wing teacher.

It’s someone who preaches their political view from their side in a classroom. I hate DeSantis, I got in trouble because I showed a movie that a parent got upset about and reported. He is terrible and I’m going to quit. I want to do what I want. I don’t care about the rules. I’m the victim here.

Good news, she can get another job somewhere else. Good news that parent can take the scholarship and go to a private school that will not show that movie.

Fear porn. Fake narrative.

LOL WUT?!

Your last two posts are a classic example of political brain worms. How does any of this relate to the article in question is beyond me.

Back onto the ignore list. I’ll check back later in a few weeks to see if you’re ready to discuss these issues like an adult.

Sidenote, you don’t always have to argue. You don’t always have to defend “your tribe.” You could just admit that what DeSantis and red states in general are freaking out about is a completely manufactured panic, Satanic Panic 2.0. And it’s a detriment to our teachers and students, especially those who are in marginalized communities.

You don’t have to defend this crap, right?

Bucknutz must sing in the choir or else! No differences of opinion are allowed!
No ****tard, you guys don’t always have to defend this ****ing ****.

God it’s exhausting. It’s the same god damned ******** from you assholes. Porn in schools? Indoctrination? These are ridiculous claims. Don’t you have anything new? We’re two years now into the CRT and LGBT scare. It’s proven to be nonsense over and over and over again. Find something new than just copying and pasting nonsense from your extreme media outlets and social media personalities. Showing a Disney video in class? If it doesn’t support the curriculum and/or parents have concerns then that’s merely a conversation with administration, teacher, and possibly parents. It’s nothing to freak out over.
Especially if the reason is because the movie had a gay character and not that it wasn’t in accordance with curriculum. Cmon. Would a similar movie been fine if none of the characters had been gay? Gays exist

If educators could indoctrinate kids, you know what they’d do? Indoctrinate your kids to put the ****ing cellphones sway and turn in their homework.

It really is exhausting.
You

Again, you’ve failed to provide any definition of what a “left wing” teacher is. It’s just a stand in word for, “something my tribe doesn’t like.” It’s the new “socialism.” Promoting political views? DeSantis’s own administration defines that as:

The governor's general counsel, Ryan Newman, said, in general, it means "the belief there are systemic injustices in American society and the need to address them." He added that DeSantis doesn't believe there are systemic injustices in the country,

Recognizing injustices and inequalities is now “left wing.”

Agsin, you guys don’t have to defend this ****. Call out your tribe for once. Use some critical thinking for a change.

Because I don't care if someone is right wing or left wing. It is arbitrary. The same person could be considered right wing, left wing, or centrist depending on who is doing the judging. There may be extreme cases such as Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, who is registered with a political party of the left and was a teacher while he wore blackface, had sex with an underage student, and was forced to leave in the middle of the school year while his daddy's fixers cleaned up the mess. I think even you would agree that Justin Trudeau was a left wing teacher.

As for what is going on in Florida, there isn't any "scare". They passed some laws that are widely popular. Remember your love for democracy? Well, this is what democracy looks like. The thing you don't like is popular opinion. If you think the people of Florida got it wrong, then make a case. Simply assigning labels to people and demonizing or insulting them, putting people on block lists, or making mocking statements where you capitalize every other letter doesn't appeal to anyone, even those who agree with you.

No ****tard, you guys don’t always have to defend this ****ing ****. Honestly, your mom should’ve swallowed and that would’ve saved us a lot of headache. *******
Personal insults to start off the conversation.

God it’s exhausting. It’s the same god damned ******** from you assholes. Porn in schools? Indoctrination? These are ridiculous claims. Don’t you have anything new?
I literally posted from books that were/are in our county schools. I’ve posted many times asking you if a certain book should be in schools, yet you won’t answer the question. These are not claims, it’s real.

You

Ironic.

Maybe it’s the state and the governor I’m defending from fake narratives. You try to make Florida out to be the worst state to live. Yet it’s thriving!

Tourism!
IMG_2543.jpeg

Economy!
IMG_2544.jpeg

Population growth!
IMG_2545.jpeg

Education!
IMG_2546.jpeg

Yes it’s thriving. 7th most diverse state in the country as well. 4th highest adult LGBTQ population in the nation. Weird, because @The Thriller told everyone Florida is Anti Gay and people of color should be scared to come here.

Just crazy how false reds and thrillers attacks are.

What’s the “don’t say gay law”? Show me a law that say this?

Since you don’t give a **** about the students described here, tell it to them. They count for nothing in your world. BTW, you keep saying “I try to make…”, but I’m not writing these pieces, and I can find many more where the Washington Post piece came from. I also know several teachers affected, in a couple of states outside Florida. I am also still friendly with former colleagues in academia and listen to their take, and their concerns. So you can pretend that this reactionary lurch is not happening in Florida, but I disagree. This latest reactionary anti-education, anti-intellectual, anti-knowledge(!!!) movement on the part of ignorant elements in our society reminds me of the era of the Scopes Monkey Trial. Really, we’re in another era of Scopes Monkey Trial-level lunacy….

But, anyway, tell it to these kids:

But the real story of the night was the response. Again and again, parents and students forcefully defended teachers. They cast the right’s attacks, the censoring of educators and the removal of books as the real threats to education.

“War on woke?” one student said pointedly. “More like war on your children’s future.”

“It’s me and my fellow students who are feeling the effects of this,” said a second student. A third said the removal of books from classrooms is what’s really “indoctrinating students.”….

Emotional response. I would and will if I have the opportunity.

Great, we can disagree. What are their concerns? From public education teachers in Florida?

This latest reactionary anti-education, anti-intellectual, anti-knowledge(!!!) movement on the part of ignorant elements in our society reminds me of the era of the Scopes Monkey Trial. Really, we’re in another era of Scopes Monkey Trial-level lunacy….
What exactly has been done in Florida to make it anti-education, anti-intellectual and anti-knowledge? Specifically, what is happening in schools here that have changed compared to let's say Virginia? What can't Florida students learn compared to Virginia?

But, anyway, tell it to these kids:
What educational books have been removed? Specifically? Math books, science books, history books? They are all still here. The lessons are all still being taught. What exactly is hurting their future? What is hurting their education?

Maybe the teachers and students should be focused on actual education:

Math:
"Compared to the 77 other education systems in PISA 2018, the U.S. average mathematics literacy score was lower than the average in 30 education systems, higher than the average in 39 education systems, and not measurably different from the average in 8 education systems."
  • The U.S. average score (478) was lower than the OECD average score (489).
  • Compared to the 36 other OECD members, the U.S. average in mathematics literacy was lower than the average in 24 education systems, higher than in 6, and not measurably different than in 6.
  • On a scale of 0 to 1,000, average scores in mathematics literacy across the education systems ranged from 591 in B-S-J-Z (China) to 325 in the Dominican Republic.
Science:
"Compared to the 77 other education systems in PISA 2018, the U.S. average science literacy score was lower than the average in 11 education systems, higher than the average in 55 education systems, and not measurably different from the average in 11 education systems"
  • The U.S. average score (502) was higher than the OECD average score (489).
  • Compared to the 36 other OECD members, the U.S. average in science literacy was lower than the average in 6 education systems, higher than in 19, and not measurably different than in 11.
  • On a scale of 0 to 1,000, average scores in science literacy across the education systems ranged from 590 points in B-S-J-Z (China) to 336 points in the Dominican Republic.
Reading
"Compared to the 76 other education systems in PISA 2018, the U.S. average reading literacy score was lower than the average in 8 education systems, higher than the average in 57 education systems, and not measurably different from the average in 11 education systems.
  • The U.S. average score (505) was higher than the OECD average score (487).
  • Compared to the 35 other OECD members, the U.S. average in reading literacy was lower than the average in 4 education systems, higher than in 21, and not measurably different than in 10.
  • On a scale of 0 to 1,000, average scores in reading literacy across the education systems ranged from 555 in B-S-J-Z (China) to 340 in the Philippines."
We are not even in the top 10% of each of these topics, yet we are the 5th highest spending per pupil:
Screen Shot 2023-06-03 at 10.25.32 AM.png

Our education is putting our students almost out of the top 10 of competitiveness.

Great, we can disagree. What are their concerns?
Given The Thriller’s command that you adopt his opinion to prove you are worthy of dialog, and Red’s strong opinions which are clearly falsified by the statistical evidence you have repeatedly provided, I found this 5 minute video to succinctly describe their mindset.
