Our measures of economic health, which are largely oriented towards the health of shareholders on a macro level, are inadequate. I don't think the CCP and therefore, the Chinese economy, values what economists in the US value. They're always "surprised" and "concerned". It's like, guys I don't think it's gonna happen.

You can **** on CCP authoritarianism and lack of free speech protections all day. But, they have a thriving, THRIVING, middle-class, high-speed rail to everywhere, universal healthcare and ample housing. Their economic priorities are elsewhere, and as long as we refuse, on purpose, to acknowledge that, western economists will continue to get it wrong.

Not right now. The economy is really bad. The middle class is suffering. Housing prices are crashing. They do have the best infrastructure in the world though. Most companies are cutting the "middle class" employees pay in half and requiring them to work 10 hours a day 6 days a week. It's really rough there right now. College graduates aren't getting jobs and the government even had the audacity to tell them to consider going to farms to work. There is a reason the meme "lying flat" is so popular.

What you said used to be the case but it's not going that way anymore. That's why protests started. There is an unspoken agreement between people and the CCP there. Everyone knows it's oppressive but that's fine if the economy is booming like it has for 20+ years. They need to turn it around quick now.

Two big issues are that when COVID hit people were okay sacrificing for the greater good. If that meant staying home and burning through savings accounts okay. But now COVID is over people want to build back those savings. People don't want to spend. The other issue is that the local gov has almost exclusively been thriving due to privatisation of housing and selling new property. But the economy is slowing and the population is dropping. Developers aren't building like crazy anymore. This means no money for infrastructure and other things due to lack of property tax. But no one owns there land. They are only leasing it 40 to 70 years. No one knows what happens when that starts to hit, even the government. I could go on for days about this though.

California fast-food restaurants have been forced to cut back on employee hours, shut down, or consider moving out of state completely because of Gov. Gavin Newsom's new $20-an-hour minimum wage law, a new study has shown.

The Employment Policies Institute survey of nearly 200 fast-food companies found that 89 percent of those eateries polled have already been forced to reduce scheduled hours for their employees, less than a year since it was passed.

Some have had to lay off staff completely - a prospect many had warned about when the progressive signed the bill into law in the fall.

Others complained that the concerns of small franchisees and their staffers would not be met - something the survey suggests is already occurring as officials continue to bill the law as a success.

The study, meanwhile, also found that of those who remain employed, there's been less access to overtime and opportunities for extra shifts, limiting their overall take-home.

California’s $20 minimum wage leads 89% of fast-food restaurants to reduce hours​


In June, Rubio’s Coastal Grill announced it was closing 48 restaurants and filed for bankruptcy, citing the minimum wage increase as one of the reasons for its financial troubles.

Now, more than a month after the Mexican restaurants’ announcement, the Employment Policies Institute published a report revealing that 67% of fast-food restaurants said the minimum wage increase will cost $100,000 per location every year. One in four owners said it would cost more than $200,000 per year.

The survey was filled out by 200 business owners across the Golden State.

Since April, 89% of restaurant owners said they’ve reduced hours, 73% have limited employee pickup or overtime opportunities, and 70% said they have reduced or consolidated staff positions.

“Even before the $20 wage went into effect, fast-food restaurants made it clear they would not be able to survive,” Rebekah Paxton, EPI research director, said. “Now after just a few months, the policy has been a disaster, killing jobs and shuttering restaurants. Gov. Newsom and state lawmakers should be listening to small business owners and their employees instead of trying to sugarcoat the truth.”

While restaurant owners have had difficult decisions to make, fast-food jobs in Southern California have hit a record high.

Both Zambada and Joaquin Guzman Lopez, the son of El Chapo, face multiple charges in the U.S. for funneling huge quantities of drugs to U.S. streets, including fentanyl, which has surged to become the leading cause of death for Americans between the ages of 18 and 45.

Vivian Jenna Wilson, the transgender daughter of Elon Musk, said Thursday in her first interview that he was an absent father who was cruel to her as a child for being queer and feminine.

On social media and in an interview posted online, Musk said she was “not a girl” and was figuratively “dead,” and he alleged that he had been “tricked” into authorizing trans-related medical treatment for her when she was 16.

Wilson said that Musk hadn’t been tricked and that, after initially having hesitated, he knew what he was doing when he agreed to her treatment, which required consent from her parents.

Wilson said that, for as long as she could remember, Musk hasn’t been a supportive father. She said he was rarely present in her life, leaving her and her siblings to be cared for by their mother or by nannies even though Musk had joint custody, and she said Musk berated her when he was present.

“He was cold,” she said. “He’s very quick to anger. He is uncaring and narcissistic.”

Wilson said that, when she was a child, Musk would harass her for exhibiting feminine traits and pressure her to appear more masculine, including by pushing her to deepen her voice as early as elementary school.

“I was in fourth grade. We went on this road trip that I didn’t know was actually just an advertisement for one of the cars — I don’t remember which one — and he was constantly yelling at me viciously because my voice was too high,” she said. “It was cruel.”

“I lost my son, essentially,” Musk said. He used Wilson’s birth name, also known as a deadname for transgender people, and said she was “dead, killed by the woke mind virus.”

Musk said Monday that Wilson was “born gay and slightly autistic” and that, at age 4, she fit certain gay stereotypes, such as loving musicals and using the exclamation “fabulous!” to describe certain clothing. Wilson told NBC News that the anecdotes aren’t true, though she said she did act stereotypically feminine in other ways as a child.

Wilson also addressed Musk’s recent comments in a series of posts Thursday on the social media app Threads.

“He doesn’t know what I was like as a child because he quite simply wasn’t there,” she wrote. “And in the little time that he was I was relentlessly harassed for my femininity and queerness.”

“I’ve been reduced to a happy little stereotype,” she continued. “I think that says alot about how he views queer people and children in general.”

At least 8 large Oklahoma school districts rebuke superintendent's order to teach Bible

State Superintendent Ryan Walters issued guidelines for Bible teaching in Oklahoma schools on Wednesday, but more districts said they won't comply.

In late June, Republican State Superintendent Ryan Walters ordered school districts statewide to integrate the Bible “as an instructional support into the curriculum" for grades five through 12. Walters has argued that the Bible is "foundational for education" and a "cornerstone of Western civilization."

“Immediate and complete implementation of these guidelines for the 2024-2025 school year is required,” Walters said in a memo sent to district superintendents. “This memorandum and the included standards must be provided to every teacher, as well as providing a physical copy of the Bible, the United States Constitution, the Declaration of Independence, and the Ten Commandments as resources in every classroom in the school district. These documents are mandatory for the holistic education of students in Oklahoma.”

But the list of large districts that have said they won’t be altering their curriculum despite the directive has grown to at least eight.
The Center for Education Law also has issued a memorandum to Oklahoma school districts calling Walters’ mandate invalid under state law. Earlier this year, the legal firm successfully represented Edmond Public Schools in the district’s lawsuit against Walters and the Oklahoma State Board of Education. Responding to that lawsuit, the Oklahoma Supreme Court ruled the content of school libraries was a decision to be made by a local school board, not the state board.

Did you actually read the part where people are getting laid off and losing hours or did you just make up some insanely stupid argument that has nothing to do with what I said? My goodness, that's the point. This has nothing to do with profits. They cannot afford to hire full staff anymore and have had to fire employees to pay a few. Explain for me please, how do people make money when they are laid off or they get less hours? @Safetydan ? What part of this do you not understand?

Cy, what do these words bolded below mean? I said nothing about profits. Nothing... It's not hard to understand that if someone works less that livable wage goes out the window. People are now losing their 40 hour benefits and they are cutting staff. Be a big boy and explain how you think that's helping. If a restaurant that has 12 people on shift but down to 6... How are this 6 people losing a complete day of work benefitting?
