I was listening to the game theory podcast* and it was actually pretty interesting. They were discussing trade targets and specifically guys who are still on their rookie deals in what they were calling, "second draft" guys. I've heard that term used differently, but for the sake of this thread we'll talk about guys who are on their rookie deal (so first 4 years in the league) who might be underutilized or not being developed properly on their current team.
The Indiana Pacers are kind of the model for making this work for them with many of the guys who were key pieces of their finals run being second draft guys. I do think the idea of professional scouting, or scouting of guys on other teams as a way to build your team isn't something that is discussed too much. In theory we have the assets to make those kinds of trades work.
Anyway here are a list of some of the guys that were discussed on the podcast:
- Devin Carter
- Jaden Ivey
- Anthony Black
- Jeremy Sochan
- Oso Ighodaro

* FWIW, I don't love the game theory podcast, but thought this was a good episode.
