Second Draft Trade Targets (Game Theory Podcast Definition)

I was listening to the game theory podcast* and it was actually pretty interesting. They were discussing trade targets and specifically guys who are still on their rookie deals in what they were calling, "second draft" guys. I've heard that term used differently, but for the sake of this thread we'll talk about guys who are on their rookie deal (so first 4 years in the league) who might be underutilized or not being developed properly on their current team.

The Indiana Pacers are kind of the model for making this work for them with many of the guys who were key pieces of their finals run being second draft guys. I do think the idea of professional scouting, or scouting of guys on other teams as a way to build your team isn't something that is discussed too much. In theory we have the assets to make those kinds of trades work.

Anyway here are a list of some of the guys that were discussed on the podcast:
- Devin Carter
- Jaden Ivey
- Anthony Black
- Jeremy Sochan
- Oso Ighodaro

* FWIW, I don't love the game theory podcast, but thought this was a good episode.

None.

We have too many young players as is and will have more coming in. No reason to try and get "2nd draft" guys.
Ya I dont like any of those guys enough to want to acquire them.

Probably not, but maybe it could be helpful to swap rookie contract guys.

Anthony Black is the guy who I like the most on this list. Getting a guy who can play perimeter defender with some hope that he can develop more could be a good idea if the price is right

I think the Jazz are a great destination for second draft guys, the one thing we'll have a lot of is opportunity.

Of that list, the guys I like most are Black and Carter. Carter we might be able to get for free. The only player I'm against adding on that list is Ivey, who I don't think is a winning player.

Players I'd add to the list: Jarace Walker and Ousmane Dieng

Ivey might have the most upside though. I 99% agree, but there is a small part of me thinking that he could break out this year. He's the exact opposite type of player we need though.

They mention Walker on the Pod, but think he is going to have a lot of opportunity in Indiana this year, and I tend to agree. Dieng is a very interesting name. He is good at a lot of things, and has shown some real flashes when he's given time. It feels like he is missing an elite skill that gets him on the court though.

I’d love taking a swing on Anthony Black. I also would be intrigued by both Jarace Walker and GG Jackson. . . although I think Memphis is just going to give him a significant role and playing time.

I think GG has a lot of potential, but based on summer league (which is almost worthless) he didn't look like he has improved much since his rookie year. I'm one of the main proponents of you shouldn't take much away from summer league, but I'm definitely lower on GG than I have been.

Besides the dumpster bin guys, I think Tari Eason's contract extension is one to watch. If there's a potential star hiding in plain sight I think it would be him, his analytics are off the charts and he could potentially have an even greater offensive role. The Rockets have already traded for KD+extended Jabari Smith. If he has ambitions to be a starter, especially before signing a contract, he would need to switch teams. I think his mom is notorious on twitter for complaining about his playing time, so maybe his people want him elsewhere as well.

I almost forgot that SGA is technically a second draft player. So basically the entire NBA finals was dominated by second draft guys.
No he wasn't. 2nd draft refers to players who are somewhat unwanted to some degree, or at an appreciable lower value than they were when drafted. SGA was still a desired player and not viewed as being less valuable than his draft position.

Read the title, this is going off of the game theory podcast definition which was explained as guys traded on their rookie contract.

(FWIW, I get why he is different, and not really applicable to anything the Jazz are trying to do.)

"who might be underutilized or not being developed properly on their current team"

I don't think rookie year SGA fits that descriptor you wrote
