2011 draft.....

To counter Locke's video of a really bad game. Here is what Valaciunas does well.

Can't the Jazz just sign Kosta Koufos as a Free Agent?

But that Dragon/war horse mascot was awesome. And does anyone else notice that the fans seem to be having alot more fun than your average NBA game?

Jeez, 3 minutes of watching some cheerleaders and it finally gets to the highlights? The creator of that video did a crappy job.

Yeah friend, I'm sorry, I'm just not seeing anything that warrants a lotto pick on this guy.

He looks exactly like Kosta Boom Bitches to me. Plays very below the rim. No lift at all.

To me, worst case: Kosta
Best case: A slightly taller and longer Nick Collison

I see Burks' game as Corey Maggette that relies on quickness instead of power to get inside but is a skilled and willing passer. But with a poor-man's Demar Derozan's body.

Has anyone taken a good look at Chris Singleton or Jordan Hamilton for our 12th pick? Singleton seems better defensively but Hamilton is very accustomed to the Jazz Flex-Offense system seeing as his college team implemented it. Both of them address our non-tweener SF needs.

You're talking about Derrick Williams here? Until reading this statement I always thought you knew what you were talking about. This guy has slam dunk champion athleticism written all over him. How can you possibly call him "not terribly athletic?"

Wesley Matthews was a slam dunk champion too. When I see Williams dunk, I see a kid trying hard to dunk and pulling it off, not Vince Carter. Just because someone can dunk and does at every opportunity does not make them athletic.

Williams is a very fluid player in his footwork and his general movements, but I don't see crazy natural explosiveness nor insanely quick feet. That's not to say he's not been stunning, but I just don't see a naturally explosive player. But he does a good job with what he's been given, but he relies in his intelligence, versatility, and aggressiveness to score more than what Perry Jones does (a magically athletic idiot who can just jump over people when he realizes he isn't late-career Kobe Bryant).

That's a tough choice. I've heard bad things about Hamilton's defensive effort and general mental fortitude/resilience, and that kind of stuff can be more trouble than it's worth but what he brings to the table is very tempting. Singleton is about the opposite since he's a versatile, athletic hustle player with little in the way of anything besides Brewer-esque scoring. But his shots not totally busted either.

I wouldn't be mad with either at 12.

You kinda described Paul Pierce in your description of Derrick Williams.

I wonder if there are 12 'lottery' worth draft picks in this draft.

I really like Donatas. I would take him over Jonas. He is very fluid, athletic, can handle, pass, shoot, is 7 feet tall and whatever defensive skills he gives you is a plus. I would even rather take him than Vessely. If he is there at 12 you got to take him unless Terrance Jones/Walker/Knight slips that far. I think he'll be picked around 8-10 range but he is on my prospect watch.

He could space the floor and play a Memo type of role. You got to admit a more athletic Memo with guard skills would be pretty awesome. He can also play overseas if you don't need him right away

In response to the argument that a player doesn't have to play D because they're good at offense:

Carlos Boozer makes a living on this philosophy, and this place erupts with ecstasy at the mention of him being gone now. Why are Jimmer and Motiejunas allowed such automatic leniency when they haven't even proven anything at the NBA level, no less?

I prefer him to Jones, Knight, and Walker. And I too see a more athletic Memo in him. But that's also what gives me pause. At that size I really want some defense out of you. Which is why I prefer Bismack.

I understand what you're saying and this is why even though I'm impressed with Donatas' offensive game I'm hesitant on him because of his passive defense.

Some have claimed that Fredette's lack of defense was BYU coached strategy in order to keep him on the floor. The BYU coaches admitted as much. Fredette's definitely been a NON-defender, and the coaches claim this was by design. But are they just covering for him? I guess it does stand to reason that with Fredette in foul trouble and forced to the bench BYU's gonna have a hard time scoring. Their +/- takes a nose dive. Ok, this fairly reasonable argument has at least postponed my conclusion that Fredette's a BAD defender. Nevertheless, there isn't much hope since there is absolutely NOTHING on Fredette's highlight reel that says even moderate defender. It's a big question mark.
But his offense is undeniable. And as long as the Jazz have a defensively minded frontline (Favors + Bismack?) then I can give more of a pass to Fredette than to Boozer. They play different positions. A good defensive big > a good defensive small. So again, more slack is given to Fredette.

And just to make this post a little longer, the problem with Boozer wasn't just his matador defense. People believed him like they believe a politician running for re-election. The guy seemed totally false and self-serving. Fredette's years at BYU look like a selfish chucker and yet in the face of this the guy seems pretty genuine and like a good teammate. Another reason why Fredette is given a little more slack.
