We might be terrible in the next couple of years no matter who we draft. I would love Barnes. Will he be available when we pick? Probably not.

Yeah, no one's all that proven - especially a freshman. But Barnes had a body of work that made him the #1 HS prospect before going to UNC. His falling short of totally dominating in his first year isn't enough reason to totally discard him. He's a gamble - like everyone - but of the guys that might be there he's nice gamble. You gotta put your money on someone.

As far as Barnes being a superfluous 3 - given that the Jazz drafted Hayward last year - I cite BPA. There isn't a SG that tempts me as much as Barnes does. (I'm actually kinda liking Kanter - in which case Jazz would have to trade a superfluous PF for a SG).

Good point.

But I just wanted to emphasize the risks of these "projects" that some here seem to love. And how many here seem to be advocating a youth movement.

The Jazz suck real bad right now. If they take on more youth and more projects, things are much likely to get worse before they get better. We seem to take OKC as our model, but seem to forget the years that it took for them to amass such talent.... And how awful it must have been for fans to watch that crap unfold for years and years.

Are we prepared to suck for the next 2-3 years while we stockpile draft picks and give time to players, like Favors and Hayward, who are going to have many games where they can't shoot, foul a lot, and are unable to contribute much positively?

Are we prepared to watch this Jazz team suck not for a stretch of road games, but for seasons?

Are we prepared to risk these players giving us little for 2-3 years and then once having a breakout season leaving us to join a big market? Because that's the newest fever in the NBA.

The Jazz are in a tough position. Probably not as bad as Cleveland or Toronto. But a tough situation nonetheless. This offseason and the following could make or break this franchise. Literally, we cannot have an offseason of drafting busts like Kosta or Kirk Snyder after trading away our franchise player.

If Barnes is the man, then he needs to be a legit starter in the NBA. Not a project like CJ that after 3-4 years can contribute here and there every 5 games. But a legit starter and hopefully allstar.

The Jazz no longer can look for role players, but all stars for their talent deprived roster.
 
The Jazz are just out of sync. Devin Harris isn't the most natural PG for the Jazz's system, the Jazz aren't really running their system, and they aren't making the extra pass to find someone open like they used to. Then on defense, they're not really helping each other either to rebound or defend.
 
I understand this is a weak draft but man, it seems like there are quite a few guys I'm liking. Maybe it's because they should end up with a top 6 pick and there are a couple within the first projected that I like - and they're not the ones everyone else is in love with (Kyrie, dwill2).
 
Taking out D-Will2 and Irving and I could still come up with 14 guys I'd like to have. Even better we're most likely getting 2 of these guys

Barnes, Sullinger, Kanter, Vessely, the Jones', Burks, Brandon Knight, Nolan Smith, Donas, Kawhi Leonard, Jimmer, Kemba Walker, Jordan Hamilton

Yeah that is probably why KOC will not trade up for a top 3. Although he may go euro on one of the picks to stash overseas for a year or two (Jonas, Donotas)?

Great post. You really hit in bold above. That is the problem with this draft, imo, is a dearth of such players. I think what we see mostly are project players up to solid starters in this draft, at best. Nothing about any of these guys screams future all-star to me.
