2016-17 NBA PLAYOFFS THREAD

Like when I think 'elite' I think you're top 10 in the league at that particular skill set or ability.

Not sure Danny Green is a top 10 defender in the league, stat wise or eye test wise.

So Gordon Hayward is not an elite scorer?

So Gordon Hayward is not an elite scorer?

I dunno I need to look at this year's stats. I wouldn't say he was in the past, no.

I would say he's an elite all round player. He scores. He shoot 3's. He rebounds. He passes.

I would say he's an elite all rounder in this league, for sure, yes.

Elite allround players:
LeBron, Durant, Giannis, Butler, Cp3, Davis, Kawhi, Curry, Wall, Towns, Lowry, Gasol
12 better allround players => Gordon not elite allround, sry.

Curry doesn't defend. Wall not sure about his shooting. Towns - is he a passer/playmaker? Lowry not sure he defends all that well.

I would actually put Hayward and PG13 above Wall, Towns, Lowry and Gasol. My list would be:

LeBron
Kawhi
Durant
Giannis
Butler
CP3
Davis
Hayward
George

Curry does defend. He's, at the very least, an average defender.

Lowry is an elite defensive player when healthy. Like truly mean elite. Curry is an ok defender, but next level playmaker and shooter. Wall plays hard defense, is great at the rim and a really good passer. Towns can do it all and midway through the season he rediscovered his defense again. Add Mike Conley who's better at Gordon at basically every facet of the game, except length.

Your arbitrary cutoffs are laughable in this instance. Even if you eliminate 4 and add George and Conley, there's still 10 already there with Gasol, who's absolutely a beast allround player.

Well, top 10-15, whatever. I still don't think 'Danny Green' is top 15 defender in the league. Sorry.

Here's 15 players who I think are better defenders than 'Danny Green':

LeBron
Kawhi
Davis
Gobert
Draymond
Ariza
Beverley
Wall
CP3
Mike Conley
Tony Allen
DeAndre
MKG
Ibaka
Karl Towns
Wiggins
Jimmy Butler
Gordon Hayward
Paul George
DeMarre Caroll
PJ Tucker
Greek Freak
Favors
Jae Crowder
Justise Winslow
Wesley Matthews
Paul Millsap
Marcus Smart
Covington

OOps... got carried away. Got 30 players who I think are better defenders than 'Danny Green'. Take away all the big guys and you'd still have 20+

Sorry, still don't think he's 'elite'. Very good/good defender, yes, elite? No.

Then you're not watching a whole lot of NBA the right way.

Look at his decision making, how he reognizes when he can't recover and immediately shifts his attention to the diving big and tries to incercept low drop offs/bounce passes, relying on the switched big to take away lobs. How he uses his body without fouling to slightly alter driving lanes and funnel them into ground bound bigs. How he can contest from behind without reaching in.
Just take the awareness part on PnR coverage, where he makes it really easy for the big to only focus on denying the score because his awareness when it's time to switch is super rare. It makes all the difference. In real time when things are moving around fast in the lane, that's super hard to nail as often as he does it.

elite
eɪˈliːt,ɪˈliːt/Submit
noun
1.
a select group that is superior in terms of ability or qualities to the rest of a group or society.

I've just listed a group of 30 players who I would take as elite defenders, sorry Danny Green is not part of that group. We can make that group bigger, like 50 or 100 players, but then that group is no longer 'elite' IMO.
