2020 Free Agency Thread

Ryan Smith has been making HORRENDOUS decisions. He has said he loved Favors and wanted to strengthen the backup 5 spot. The GM's should have fought him hard on this draft/free agency, I agree.
Not sure if it will work, but I’m intrigued with Favors coming back. His off/on court numbers have to be some of the best in the nba for his price point... and it’s shown true across two different teams now.

Favors / Gobert combo wasn’t the issue, it was when another non-shooter was added to the mix. We’ve added three shooters to the team since the combo was attempted...

Next year, it is extremely possible that we are going to have $50 million invested in 3 players who can only play C in the playoffs (Rudy, Favors and Udoka).

By comparison, the Lakers this year will have less than $5 million invested in players who can only play C.

That's not going to happen. You'd have to be blind to not see that we are planning on trading Rudy. We won't go down the same route we did with Hayward. Faves replaces some of what Rudy gives us and Udoka is some insurance. The question is who are we going to get for Rudy and who can we add with his salary?

I was as outspoken as anyone against the pick.

But I do find it odd to say 'Terrible pick, he was going to be a second rounder!'. While also saying "How could we possibly bury our FIRST ROUND pick on the depth chart??" You guys do know the success rate of late round picks right? Not really a negative to not be heavily relying on the 27th pick in his rookie year.
The problem is that it is both.

There is a big difference with guys who are only centers... you flat out can’t play two at a time. PGs are similar but you can get away with double pg lineups.

You want to see a path to playing time if the rookie is ready. Most aren’t as you noticed. BUT if you take a wing and they surprise you it is easy to get time. They need that 8 minutes a night to prep them for a real role in year 2. But the thing with wings is you can play 3-4 of them at a time. Assuming full health and Miye being ready they don’t have a to. Of playing time but if one of Don, Royce, Joe, Mike, Miye, Bojan or JC get hurt there would be available wing minutes... that’s 7 guys. If Rudy or Favs gets hurt there are some minutes for Udoka.

We also have a bigger need on the wing and will have guys leaving is the next two years that we need to replace... perfect time to bring in a wing. We didn’t sign a wing to play over Miye... even more reason to draft a wing to not rock the pecking order.

it’s just weird to say all offseason we want to improve our defense while not compromising floor spacing and emphasize bringing in true bigs.

I really like signing Favs... he’s great and will settle the Locker room a bit. He had a great connection with Don and Rudy. It’s the pick that kills me... when you knew you were getting Favs(and they knew... there were smoke signals early and often).

I somewhat agree with you, but our FO and culture is very stubborn. We rarely, if ever, risk anything. I don't think they will trade Rudy. That's too aggressive. Too bold. They will rationalize spending into the luxury easier than trading Rudy away.

Players actually take substantially less to play there. Getting Gasol and Morris for minimum contracts is ridiculous.
Agree. I think Karl Malone and Gary Payton Sr played that year there for relative chump change. It is almost patently unfair to the rest of the league.

I agree.

I think resume should come into account with "minimum" amount. If a player is a former all star, their minimum should be at least a few hundred thousand more than somebody like NWG.
