2020 Free Agency Thread

If things somehow get narrowed into a discussion of Clarkson or Wood, for more or less equal money, I sure as **** hope our organization knows the obvious choice. It’s kind of weird how things seem like they’ve sorta headed in that direction.

I need for a cap expert to chime in. From what I understand, we are $18 million under the luxury.
I just gave you the numbers; you're misinformed. Per Capulator:

Conley: $34,502,130
Gobert: $26,525,281
Bogdanovic: $17,850,000
Ingles: $10,863,637
O'Neale: $8,500,000
Mitchell: $5,195,501
Azubuike (#27): $2,119,320
Hughes (minimum): $898,310

Total: $106,454,179

LT: $132,627,000
Space under LT: $26,172,821

Gotta factor in the minimum cap holds for each roster slot (same $ amount as Hughes I believe)

No you don't. Those spots will ultimately be filled by players.
So you can say that we have $26 to allocate for 6 players while staying under the luxury. It's not like we can go out and give Clarkson his estimated $10+, use the full MLE and stay under the luxury unless we are filling out the roster with a bunch of 2nd round contract types.

Outside of re-signing JC and using the MLE and BAE, the Jazz are only permitted to sign minimum players, just like every other team over the salary cap. If JC signs a contract starting at ~$10 mil, the Jazz have plenty of room under the LT to use the full MLE. If they're willing to creep into the LT a little, they have plenty of room to use the BAE and stay below the apron.

This is exactly what unloading TB and Davis bought the Jazz. They were in no danger of going over the LT with those two if they didn't use the MLE.

As I already said...

What a non-statement, yes, we are required by the CBA to fill another 5-6 roster slots. We only have the minimum available for them outside of the exceptions. It doesn't matter who those guys are, it's stupid to not include their salaries in cap calculations, it's not like they don't count against the tax.

Here is how i am looking at Free agency for the Jazz

Roster right now with Guaranteed contracts (as I see it)

PG - Conley,
SG - Mitchell, O'Neale
SF - Bogey, Ingles
PF -
C - Gobert, Azubuike

Non guaranteed if I am correct

PG - NWG
SG - Tucker
SF - Oni, Hughes
PF - Niang
C - Morgan

I understand the Bogey can play the 4 and O'neale played some also

I see the biggest glaring holes at PF and PG. The defense is also a key element

PG - I think overpaying for Jevon Carter is the best option for a backup PG . I am talking about the full BAE. This might not be enough because he is restricted maybe half the MLE but he is exactly what the Jazz need and I think he would be a full-time PG in the right situation.
If this doesn't work I would Go after Harrison, Jackson, Neto, and then Dunn (I hate his 3pt%)

Get rid of NWG and watch for players waived by teams.

PF - is a conundrum to me. there are so many directions. I would love to get Millsap back as a backup but closer to the vet min because he is injured a lot. Portis is nice with the Nasty but not a great defender. JyMichael green makes a lot of sense if he can be had for the right price. Christian Wood would be a pipe dream but the Jazz don't have the assets or the money to offer him and I do not think the MLE is enough.

SF - I do not think the MLe is enough for Jerami Grant but I could move Bogey to 4 and start him at the 3. A dark horse back up that I wonder if the Jazz could fix or develop is Josh Jackson.

The point is to show how much money the jazz have to fill the roster, so it makes no sense to include roster holds. The Jazz have $26 million under the LT to sign 6 or 7 players.

When you’re talking about actual salary cap space, yes, it does. Why would you include the minimum salary for the players to fill out the roster in the open space we have. We have to fill out the roster it’s not a choice so that is not open space.
