I’d rather nominate a moderate Democrat who can win swing states than lose to Trump by nominating the purist ideologue possible.

Bernie is polling better than Trump in swing states. I understand that Bernie is further left than you'd prefer in a D candidate, but your dislike for him is causing you to ignore reality.

The funny thing about Sanders' comments about the USSR is that his visit came during the period where that country was in the middle of attempted reforms toward openness and potentially a democratic society. Within that context it makes sense why Sanders would claim he was surprised by such things. Of course things didn't quite turn out that way in the long run, but at the time there was reason for optimism as the USSR and US relations were on a path toward normalization.

FWIW that visit took place the same year Ronald Reagan said he didn't view the USSR as the Evil Empire anymore, and that that was a "different time, a different era."

Just a couple things to think about when trying to get your red scare on.

What I described is the same experience as nearly every Bernie supporter I've encountered fwiw.

I think the majority of people want an opportunity to improve their situations. But, and it's a big but, it's difficult to just shove money into the lower end and improve things. Sure, some program might save you a couple thousand like you're hoping but what good does it do you when rents go up as a side effect?

I'm all for redistribution, more of it please, just don't expect it to be faerie dust.

The economy here is screaming, average wage increases have been huge, and real estate is through the roof. I saw a 784 square foot condo for sale in Orem for $220k. Redistribution isn't helping that first time home buyer.

It wouldn't be hard for him to answer well. Obama hiked taxes on the wealthy by a massive amount. It wasn't just paper rate hikes with no bottom line increases either. The effective tax rate on the rich went up significantly.

And then Trump cut them back.

All Sanders would have to say is the economy was soaring along after Obama, and we didn't need to explode the debt for the small blip in gdp growth that TCJA gave us.

Well I mean he would just have to look at history.
There was a time when the super wealthy were being taxed very heavily. Things were better for the middle class then.

But who said we should stop communicating with people we’ve already won over?

What I said was that we had already won the county that Flint is in and still lost Michigan in 2016. In order to win Michigan in 2020, we need to reach out and win over counties that are light red and voted for Trump in 2016. That’s not neglecting Flint or disrespecting those residents in any way. It’s called, “expanding your base.” It’s what we did in 2018 to retake the House.

I really don’t understand why this is so hard for some of you to understand. We lost in 2016. The popular vote doesn’t matter. Winning the Electoral College does. Unless we win over people in swing states who didn’t vote in 2016, voted 3rd Party, or voted for Trump, we will lose again.

This isn’t rocket science guys.
