2020 Presidential election

I'm sensing major stupidity from the Democratic party. I think the D vote will be split, possibly three ways, and many Ds will take their ball and go home and let Trump get re-elected.

The Democrats are afraid Howard Schultz running as an independent would hand the election to Trump, and Schultz is afraid the Democrats nominating a progressive would hand the election to Trump. (And, right now, Joe Biden would become the Democratic frontrunner if he announced, despite his age).

"If there is a choice between President Trump and a progressive, liberal-minded person on the Democratic side, it would kill me to see President Trump be re-elected," Schultz, a "lifelong Democrat," said in his interview on NPR. "And I believe that's what would take place."

who cares about this. this thread is too early!

first we have to get a ruth abder ginsburg replacement. it will be EPIC!

the butthurt and reee-ing would be amazing

Relax.

Everyone knew that there would be a big pool of Dems in the primary.

I think people are overreacting to all of this. Honestly, just by this April people like Howard Shultz will be long forgotten. I think the country has had enough already of a clueless rich blowhard with zero political experience.

By the time primary season actually begins, I think there will be a wide variety of democratic candidates. The debates will be interesting. I honestly don’t fear Dems getting butthurt like last time and staying home for the General. 2016 was such an anomaly

I think it’s good to have debates about good and big liberal ideas finally. For years democrats acted like republican lite. It’s about time we talk about raising marginal taxes, single payer systems, and Green job proposals.

You're pointing out exactly what I think might cause the problem. You think the Ds are going to fully embrace "good and big liberal ideas" but there is a real chance they will not, and you'll get Republican lite. If that's what the Democratic establishment gives you there may be some who decide it doesn't matter as much as they thought it did.

I disagree. Republican lite is fine and i think most will vote for that over third party, trump, or sitting at home.

You’re missing the point I made in the previous post. What I, and many other Dems I’ve spoke to like is that the party has a wide range of political beliefs. That includes more conservative and establishment ideas and candidates and more progressive ideas and candidates. Views and ideas that 50 years ago were more mainstream but since Clinton have been shunned. I personally love AOC and her 70 percent marginal tax rate rhetoric is exactly the type of discussion we need to have. It’s substantive.

Unlike the republican debates where all tax rates are demonized and they’re comparing the sizes of each other’s hands.

I think people are forgetting that despite hacked emails leaking onto the web, a rampant Russia disinformation campaign, and Clinton’s baggage, Democrats won the popular vote by 3 million votes.

Knowledge of the Russian campaign alone imo would’ve tipped the scale in those 3 battleground states to clinton’s Favor.

Trump’s unpopularity alone and now economic failings in those states (google Foxconn) and potential crimes by Mueller will lead to a blowout.

Honestly, I’d be surprised to see trump on the ballot in 2020.

Having said all of that, campaigns matter. Democrats are notorious for running poor campaigns. They all too often let Fox News Drive the narratives. Plenty of time for them to screw the pooch.

But I’m tired of people acting like 2020 is like going up against Reagan in 84 or FDR in 36. The trump presidency is a miserable institution that wants to be killed off. It’s begging to be wiped out. I think winning for any democrat in 2020 will be far easier than in 2016. Easier than in 2008 even since McCain actually was qualified for the job.

I think the midterms showed us how much we are enjoying all of this “winning.” How many house seats did republicans lose again?

Yes. And it should. Because trump hogs all of the oxygen in the room people think he’s the love child of FDR, Tom Brady, and Lebron James. How’s that for a visual? As if he’s the very essence of success. The truth is far different. He’s a loser. He’s never been above 45 percent approval.

He lost the popular vote BEFORE anyone knew of Russian interference and its role in exacerbating cracks within the DNC and discouraging Bernie’s fans from voting. Before anyone knew who mueller even was. Before all of these indictments, trump tower meetings were known, and before nonvisitors of porn hub knew of stormy Daniels. Before kids were put in cages. Before the shutdown. And before whatever stupid *** thing trump does tomorrow.

* He lost the popular vote by 3 million when he was far less known and far better liked.
* He won 3 battleground states that Hillary neglected by a total of 80,000 votes. That’s not happening again.
* The 2 years have been supportive of dem resurgence and trump failings. Special elections leading up to the midterms saw increases in dem spending and voting. Hell, even in utah democrats won (Ben McAdams). Utah county and southern salt lake county are hardly considered liberal sanctuaries. With trump campaigning Almost every night he lost 40 (gerrymandered) house seats.

2020 isn’t going to be easy. I think the electoral college always favors states with lower populations. And the media will always chase trump because he’s so loud. But let’s not pretend like he’s some successful president. He’s been a complete failure and he’s turned off millions of people. His approval rating is down to 38 percent. What’s he gonna do to improve on that? Especially when we consider Mueller’s potentially devastating report?
