2020 Presidential election

The elections of right wing demagogues occurring all across the world are loosely connected. Candidates viewed as hostile to the ruling class are popular right now. Stagnated wages, low job satisfaction, and lack of access to healthcare and education has created a critical mass of desperate people. Outside of Bernie and Elizabeth Warren, I don’t see a progressive alternative to Trump. If Biden gets the nomination, it’s over. Trump will push through to reelection, on the same anti-establishment/outsider energy that got him and Obama elected.

Agree. All the Republican candidates sucked. And so did the Democratic ones too. Im still waiting for a candidate I actually like..
 
The democrats did such a poor job in 2016, and I **** you not, they literally lost a presidential election to Donald Trump.

I don’t think we should let people off that easily. Deplorables who vote for populists and hateful demagogues aren’t all “victims” of capitalism or globalism. “Economic anxiety” as the primary driver behind right wing populism was debunked in something I read a while ago. I’ll try and find the article I read...

Even historically, “economic anxiety” has been used as a popular explanation for citizens turning against their fellow citizens and electing a populist. But just because something has been repeated as nauseam doesn’t make it true. Germany’s Economy was already recovering prior to Hitler’s rise to power.

The most likely primary factor in rise of right wing white supremacy both here and in Europe is racism and sexism:

The PRRI analysis of more than 3,000 voters, summarized The Atlantic’s Emma Green, “suggests financially troubled voters in the white working class were more likely to prefer Clinton over Trump.” Got that? Hillary Clinton over Trump. Meanwhile, partisan affiliation aside, “it was cultural anxiety — feeling like a stranger in America, supporting the deportation of immigrants, and hesitating about educational investment — that best predicted support for Trump.”

In fact, according to the survey data, white, working-class voters who expressed fears of “cultural displacement” were three-and-a-half times more likely to vote for Trump than those who didn’t share these fears.

in January 2018, a study by three Amherst political scientists — Brian F. Schaffner, Matthew MacWilliams, and Tatishe Nteta — asked: “What caused whites without college degrees to provide substantially more support to Donald Trump than whites with college degrees?” Here’s their answer, based on survey data from 5,500 American adults:

We find that racism and sexism attitudes were strongly associated with vote choice in 2016, even after accounting for partisanship, ideology, and other standard factors. These factors were more important in 2016 than in 2012, suggesting that the explicitly racial and gendered rhetoric of the 2016 campaign served to activate these attitudes in the minds of many voters. Indeed, attitudes toward racism and sexism account for about two-thirds of the education gap in vote choices in 2016.

Stanford:

Third, in April 2018, Stanford University political scientist Diana Mutz published a study in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences that observed how “living in an area with a high median income positively predicted Republican vote choice to a greater extent in 2016,” which is “precisely the opposite of what one would expect based on the left behind thesis.” Mutz found no evidence that a decline in income, or a worsening “personal financial situation,” drove working-class voters into the welcoming arms of a billionaire property mogul. Nor did a decline in manufacturing or employment in the area where Trump voters lived.

So what did she conclude?

In this election, education represented group status threat rather than being left behind economically. Those who felt that the hierarchy was being upended—with whites discriminated against more than blacks, Christians discriminated against more than Muslims, and men discriminated against more than women—were most likely to support Trump.

Sides and his co-author Robert Griffin found that “economic anxiety was actually decreasing, not increasing” in the run-up to the presidential election and “what was distinctive about voting behavior in 2016 was not the outsized role of economic anxiety,” but “attitudes about race and ethnicity” that were “more strongly related to how people voted.”

The evidence is plain to see in trump’s daily tweets and fascist rallies. His voters care the most about “the wall”, immigrants, sexism, and sticking it to minorities (Muslims, LGBT, etc). His voters live in a constant state of victimhood and alt facts. They’ll never be satisfied. Just look at how angry they still are despite having complete control of government for most of Trump’s presidency.

Trump’s enabled by a powerful and rich political base that is exploiting him for regulation and tax cuts, just as the conservative base exploited Hitler (until he grew out of control). The Kochs, Mercers, Adelsons, and Mitch McConnells of the nation don’t give a **** about the wall or Trump. But they do love what he’s doing to the epa, law enforcement agencies and federal/supreme courts, and tax code.

He’s supported by a well developed propaganda apparatus of online trolls, am radio, and Fox News hosts who make money by spreading their misinformation and paranoia to the rubes addicted to incessant victimhood and life in a cultural bubble of alt facts. What began as a misinformation and paranoia campaign under Nixon’s “silent majority”, got kicked into high gear in 1993 with the launch of Fox News, has really been perfected with the development of social media. These people are lost to their own angry reality of perpetual victimhood and hate.

I’m not sure if we’ll ever get 30-40 percent of the country back. But the rest of us sure can outvote them for the well-being of our nation and planet.

I thought the "well meaning" comment was the most telling, in relation to Trump's ever present narcissism. For Trump, it was "well meaning" because whoever was responsible was thinking of Trump's feelings. Completely lost to Trump, on the other hand, is the fact that it's somehow "well meaning" to want to dishonor the memory of McCain, as well as McCain's father and grandfather. Plus, he had to take the time to once again inform everyone just how much he disliked John McCain. Really impossible to confuse this president with a class act....

Hillary won the majority vote by 3 million voters.

She lost 3 key battleground states that delivered the electoral college to trump where Russian disinformation was at its highest by a combined 80,000 votes.

Hillary was a flawed candidate.

But her campaign’s mistakes have been greatly over-exaggerated while Russian disinformation and the culture of American victimhood and alt history/facts under-reported. For hells sakes, we are still debating whether we should have statues of terrorists like Robert E Lee up in public places.

Is Germany debating whether or not they should place statues of Hitler in public places?

America’s refusal honestly tackle the issue of racism and failure of reconstruction after the civil war is what’s led us to the cultural divide we have today.

I agree with you there. 100 percent. Pundits claim that Biden can “recapture” the white suburban vote. Yet, they ignore that his nomination will go over like a lead balloon. Young people, progressives, and people of color won’t be excited over Biden.

Democrats should focus on exciting their base and overrunning Trump voters in 2020, not chasing after the handful who left and defected to trump.

Yes, racism and sexism, not the widely reported “economic anxiety” myth. Racism and sexism are the primary factors for trump’s rise.
