Looking at the OP page , Numberica appears to be right. I am by the rules forced to choose players from the 5 eras with my first five picks, but it doesn’t say that they can’t constitute my reserves.
Not trying to make a stink but this puts a significant constraint on team-building if it’s a rule, and whether it is or isn’t is of critical importance to how a person might approach their build. I would have absolutely drafted Bill Russell with my second pick if that was the case.

I think a reasonable adjustment would be to
A.) make sure each team drafts one player from each of the 5 eras with their first five picks
B.) those five players CAN NOT be traded after being drafted
C.) you can use them however you want to in your lineup - you just can’t trade them away
That is the main reason I drafted him is because I thought the first have had to be started.
Absolutely not! There was never an agreement that the first five had to be your starters, nor was it in the rules. That would completely change my draft strategy. We can't change the rules in the middle of the game.

You made a bad assumption about the rules that was not in the rules.
Because then people will just do exactly what they did last year: trade out as much as possible from an era they don’t like in order to trade into an era that they do like.
Its an effort to increase a basis of comparison. But it’s also important to not lock people out of competition, which is what happens when someone drafts the 16th best player from the legacy era and has to start them.
Mandating that you can’t trade out one of your first five players makes it so that there is still significant opportunity cost to drafting from the least-preferred era 5th. If we’re being explicit, this creates a premium to legacy-era players and strong incentive to start them from the perspective of pick value or opportunity cost. Allowing them to come off the bench allows for some flexibility for those that draft a player once the legacy pool becomes, IMO, game-changingly shallow.
In any case, stipulating that the first five players must be starters needs to be explicitly stated in at least one of the OPs but I think it’s a bad idea even if it was stipulated.
