Aaron Gordon, a No. 5 Pick?

The truth lies VERY much in between the two hyperbolic arguments put forth in the last few pages of this thread.

Numb is very right, IMO, in the fact that AG's upside and potential are what you'd be drafting him on at #5. He is a very good athlete, has huge defensive potential and seems to have a fantistic feel for the game/BBIQ. BUT, his lack of mid range game (27% on 2 PT jumpers.....), ability to create his own shot and free throw shooting are hard to ignore. SO, if you draft him this high, you're BETTING (you DO NOT know) that you can fix those. If you can, the kids ceiling is through the roof.

Is he better than Jeremy Evans now? Of course he is.

If he can attack off the dribble then he isn't completely inept at "creating his on shot". Also even if he does nothing more than become a 3rd ball handler, lock down defender, and slasher that he is a quality pick.

Being able to effectively attack off the dribble isn't a wildly common trait.

Sincere question, how much have you seen of Gordon? Just DX vids? First 6 mins?

This is just year two of the rebuild for you guys. Man you have absolutely no patience.

Last year was a rebuilding year?

Wow. What a ****ty rebuild. Start 2 vets for most of the year, no experimentation with lineups, and a fired head coach.

Have about 4 pages of this still to read, but having read the page snce my last post, I can see The Thriller & Numberica on their usual **** about needing and wanting someone in the top 3.

****ing Duh! That is what everyone wants, but if it doesn't happen... A. Gordon has an incredible amount of upside, has a very well rounded skill set, and an improving shooting touch. His game is more complete than Wiggins (wiggins better in iso, but is still project. Better shooter, but isn't great),with his far better handles and court vision, etc. if he made his FT's, he'd be in discussions for no. 1 pick, because of the rest of the game paired w/ his upside.

J. Evans comparisons have already been discussed a thousand times here. Honestly, they were never worthy of a response in the first place. Watch the kid play, then come with some intelligent things to discuss, or just stop... Ignorance isn't intelligence.

The way I see the other options at 5 if consensus top 4 are gone:

Randle: doesn't measure right. Not nearly athletic as advertised in HS. Handles and 3 pt shot were an illusion. Doesn't defend, and w/ his measureables and lack of athleticism, probably never will be able to. His bully ball offense won't be nearly as effective in pros, and rebounds will be harder to come by. He might be hungry, but I don't want him eating at my table at the expense of the more promisung Kanter, Favors & Gobert trio.

Vonleh: project, project, project. Great size, hands, and decent athleticism. Not a shot blocker, and takes some plays off on D, but has promise on D. Has a nice shooter's touch, but his release is a little slow and low. Movements looks slow and robotic, and he is not a passer at all. Question his BBIQ. Body, shot range, and rebounding are for real (still kind of question shot because of sample size and release), but yet he hasn't looked truly dominant yet in his career. Definitely will take sometime to be real contributor, and if you are wrong about him, you've gone and messed w/ your already developing front court.

Smart: great size and D. Gets to th rack, and plays w/ pace. Those are characteristics that would help the team. Plays w/ a mean streak, and also racks up the steals. Still struggling w/ PnR and court vision, so I am hesitant to say he is for us when I think about iur bigs that would be reliant on him for the ball.

What part of that did you disagree with? Gordon has the ability to attack off the dribble. He certainty can slash and finish.

Gordon can finish, but attack…he didn't do much of that this year.

Again, I got this information from Deanondraft, but Gordon had 18 unassisted field goals at the rim in a little under 1200 minutes. Granted, it didn't seem like anybody from Arizona really tried to get to the rim that much by themselves, so it could be a team concept, but we certainly cannot say that we saw Gordon do a lot of slashing and finishing.

He finishes at a 73% rate. That is amazing. As an 18 year old, this explains some of the reason why his shot isn't where we would like it. He has never needed it to this point. He will definitely need it in the pros. Randall finishes at 70% and Vonleh at 59% #hungry
