Al Jefferson and #12 to Cavaliers?

Before I say anything this is a not a real trade rumor, it is just an trade idea that I came up with after some re-search.

Jazz trade Al Jefferson and #12 to Cavaliers for a $13,000,000 Trade Exception.

Here me out on this first, last year around the time the Jazz got Al Jefferson from the Timberwolves, the Cavaliers were very interested in Al Jefferson. They were offered Jefferson for a trade exception straight up last year by the Timberwolves, but the Cavaliers said they needed an extra asset.

Jazz get rid of $13,000,000 in salary for the #12 pick pretty much, the trade exception could be used in the future to pick up a player with a big salary for free basically, the Cavaliers would do it since Jefferson's deal is better than Hamilton's but the Cavs wanted the #8 too, since Jefferson's deal is better they get a worse pick #12 which is not that much of a downgrade. They could use it in a deal similar to the one propsed earlier or they could keep it and have the #1, #4, and #12 picks in the draft for the future.

One big thing this trade would be good for besides the trade exception is it would free up room for Enes Kanter if the Jazz were to pick him at #3, that is unless Derrick Williams is available in that case it is just getting rid of a lot of salary and freeing up cap space.

If we do draft Kanter I'd rather see him ease into his role - so I'd rather have Jefferson there for at least the coming year...

- Front court: Start Favors & Jefferson. Kanter significant minutes off the bench. Start him with Favors 3/4 through next season.

- Experiment with Millsap at the 3. If DWill_2 can do it - so can he.

- Draft Jimmer to play behind Harris.

For those reasons I'd say no to the above trade.

- KOC has said numerous times that you don't learn by losing and that they're not rebuilding, rather, they're retooling.

For those reasons I'd say KOC would say no to the above trade as well.

Why trade for a trade exception right before a CBA? What happens if they don't exist after the negotiations are done? You gave away a 18/10 & #12 for nothing?

Also giving up #12 is giving up the chance pretty much to land Jimmer. He is worth millions more to the Jazz than anyone else just on jersey & ticket sales from the locals.

You cant trade "trade exceptions". They are only used to absorb contracts of players that are to high for the teams salary. This is similar to the Al Jefferson trade, we got a trade exception because we did a sign and trade with Carlos Boozer. Minny never got a trade exception back from us for Al Jefferson, they got a 1st round pick and Koufos. The Trade Exception was just used to absorb Jefferson's contract since we were already above the salary cap. So in your trade, we could clear 13 million dollars of salary cap but we wouldn't be receiving a trade exception in return.


I would only trade Jefferson and 12 straight up for the 1st Pick and hope to draft both Irving and D-Will

So in the instance of the Jefferson deal, we used the Boozer exception to get him while Minnesota gave up Jefferson and took back a very small amount of salary, thus generating a trade exception worth the difference between Jefferson and Koufas' salaries.

Wrong. When one team trades a player to another team and does not take back equivalent salary, meaning the recipient of the surplus has cap space, then the other team gets a TPE in return. Utah trading Jefferson to a team with cap space and not taking back equivalent salary would result in a TPE for Utah that could be used to acquire existing contracts.

I'm not entirely certain what you're trying to communicate but I think Franklin summed it up rather simply.
