I would much, much rather have Tomic on a 3 year contract, than Kanter.

4th or 5th big, for about the same minutes he gets in Europe, for about what Booker is making. . . and this is an issue?
If the Jazz trade Kanter, then I think they make an effort to bring him over. Rudy and Favors are the starters moving forward. Jazz just need guys who can come in off the bench and contribute for stretches. He can score and he can pass. Wish they'd have just brought him over in 2012 when they had the chance, but they picked Evans (and his cheaper contract) instead.

Sabonis was born in communist Russia - he couldn't play in the US early in his career. And even if he could it was a different world back then.

Plus. . . I like Tomic a lot and hope that they bring him over. . . but he's no Arvydas Sabonis. Not even after Sabonis got hurt.
I think that the Jazz need to bring Tomic over this year if they want him at all. He won't need to start to be worth the investment, and his flaws will be no worse than any other backup big that the Jazz can acquire for that cost.
If they do, then I could see his contribution being very, very similar to that of Joe Ingles. And quite frankly, Jingles has been a Godsend for the Jazz without Burks and Hood. The past few games show just how much it helps having him in the lineup over Lilsap and Co.

Sabonis is still a great example of a player that came over late in his career and still produced. IDK if the NBA changed THAT much in 15 years where a guy of his talents wouldnt still be great in the league. A player like Kevin Love is practically a stiff and he is a double double man a night. Sabonis would still get close to the same today that he did back then.
But my point was that it has happened before where someone came later in his career and still produced. Even if Tomic was a good bench player, it would still be worth bringing him over.

Yeah I was just making the point that it has happened before and you shouldnt just dismiss the idea of bringing someone over just because of his age.

My guess is that it's either this year, or not at all. Barcelona is hot to extend him, but he has some real leverage now. Utah can either come hard and convince him to jump, or he can use the Jazz to get a better contract in Spain instead of playing for his team option number - which is going to be less than he's worth.
And Tomic is in his PRIME right now. He's playing at a very high level right now.
