What's new

Arcade Fire concerts are the greatest spectacle on the planet.

I just got back from Austin City Limits and I have to say that the Arcade Fire just put on the greatest spectacle I have seen in quite some time. This was right up there with John Stockton hitting the three over Barkley back in '97, except for 1.5 hours continuously. If you ever have a chance to see these guys, take it!

Completely agreed. They were easily the best part of Outside Lands. My life is completely enriched for having heard 35,000 people simultaneously do the swelling vocal section that begins "Wake Up."

I saw half their set at a festival, I was unimpressed. I didn't like their music before that though, so I went in thinking I was going to dislike it.

This band seems to resonate with so many people but I just can't seem to get on board. I've seen them perform live on TV and listened to quite a bit of their stuff and not for one second did I ever feel even remotely interested.

Meh, to each his own. I am sure Insane Clown Posse puts on one heck of a show too, but I am also sure it would not be everyone's cup of tea.

I for one think it is pretentious drivel that in no way would've piqued my interest if not for the clambering to heap praise on them for some reason.

I actually like them, but that is EXACTLY how I feel about Radiohead.

I'm biased, I love their music, but even subtracting that the show was awesome. The lights, the energy, the special effects, the giant LED video display, the 35,000 fans singing at the top of their lungs, Austin in the background. It was really cool.

So this thread made me wonder. I checked spotify and can get nothing from arcade fire other than a cover band. So I youtubed it and watched a couple vidoes, at least I started about 3 or 4 and quickly went to the next one. Their concerts better rock because their music sucks. Very boring and derivative. I found myself watching an ad banner and tuning out their song on youtube.

To each their own but "Funeral" is my choice for best album of the last decade, but "Neon Bible" and "The Suburbs" didn't have the same lasting effect on me. I would have liked to see them when they came here a few months ago but I hate going to Orem and due to real life happening, I wouldn't have been able to see them had they been across the street. One day.

They have enough material at this point that their live shows are no-filler affairs. I suspect you'd be happy with the setlist, which when I saw them tended to draw from Funeral just as much as more recent albums. I thought they were good enough that I shelled out for Bridge School Benefit tickets once I saw that they were playing.

It's difficult to describe how good "Sprawl II" from The Suburbs is live. This Bonaroo video is the best I've seen at capturing Regine's total radiance.

EDIT: For some reason the board software doesn't respect the time-stamp element of the link. The song begins at the 46 second mark.

Cool video man. That was captured it pretty well, but just being there blew my miiiind. She nearly blew the fa doh-doh right off my head!

Kanye was the headliner for Friday's events, he put on a really great show. It was so over-the-top and self-serving that it was awesome. He popped out of the middle of the crowd in a box they wheeled out prior to the concert. I was probably within 50 feet of him. Then he walked through the crowd and high fived everyone. Basically it was all of his number one hits and him ranting about how awesome he is. I really couldn't argue with him though. He also talked about speaking the truth and getting black balled for 2 years, as well as about how skewed the media is.

But the show I most enjoyed outside of the headliners was Broken Social Scene. They didn't have the big special effects that the headliners did, but their music was good and they had like 12 people in their band with a full brass quartet. Their show had a lot of energy.

Wow. Sounds like a fabulous train wreck.

ZZ Top used to put on a good show. So did Twisted Sister. Also, Rammstein and Iron Maiden.
