I think Anderson and a couple firsts down the road from Houston is worth it.

I don't see a Washington trade that helps us.

I would take Asik if we got a 1st from New Orleans. His contract isn't crippling and gone before Mitchell or Gobert need a new deal.

I would take Biyombo if it got us Fournier and their first. We ain't getting Gordon. Now that's ridiculous.

I'd do a Favs to Wash. for Gortat and a 1st rounder... they'd likely want to send Mahinmi instead. I'd try and do a Boston BRK deal if they wanted that... Favs for Ian 2018 1st, 2019 pick swap rights, 2020 pick unprotected. I think that'd be too steep for them though.

I don't think they would trade Oubre for cap relief... draft assets likely more appealing.

He could be stretched in year 3 and his contract declines. It is an ugly *** contract, but the cap hit could be as low as $5M which would not hurt our ability to sign a max FA. Hood at 20M however would.

Here are the reasons why these teams want to dump the contracts:

Washington - they are $6 million over the luxury this year and way over for next year. They are not a team that can afford to be a repeat offender of going over the luxury tax. They don't want to trade Beal, Wall, or Porter. Mahinmi is the obvious casualty for an asset or two.

Houston - they have tried to move Anderson. Why? Because his contract hurts their chance to contend. They could stomach this year because they have Paul. They can't keep Anderson this summer and beyond because Capella, Paul and Ariza have to get retained. On top of that, they might need more talent to contend. They will use an asset to dump Anderson.

New Orleans - they traded a bit for Boogie and they want to keep him. To keep him and AD for that matter, they need to pay him AND put the team around AD. Asik is a massive roadblock to adding to Holiday, Boogie and AD. Asik has to go using an asset or NO loses a chance to build around an all NBA talent. NO is probably the least needy on this list, but they have a very tiny window with AD.

The situation isn't that rare. Yes, some teams can stomach a bad contract from time to time. However, these three teams can't if they want to get near their most important goals (avoiding repeater luxury, title contention, or keeping a roster together).

I have to disagree with the assumptions that you are making about Washington. Beal and Wall are untouchable but Porter is not. He is underperforming his contract. He has the potential to be the person that is moved because he is the highest paid player until walls extension kicks in. If washing could dump his contract for future assets they would consider them.

Mahinmi could easily be a stretch provision. Reducing his contract from 16 mill a year for the next 2 to 6.4 mill a year for the next 5 year. Moving Porter and stretching Mahinmi would save the wizards 36 million next year and drop them to under 90 million. Giving them over 15 million to spend and depending on the trade to move porter then could have even more.

How about this - I'm not even a betting man, but I'll make some kind of avatar bet if I'm wrong. If Houston, Washington, Lakers or New Orleans don't do a salary dump deal before the deadline in February, I'll let you set my avatar for the rest of the season.

That would be a stupid be because it is almost a forgone conclusion that the lakers are going to do a salary dump. They want James and George I just don't think that they are going to hive up Kuzma or Ingram

How would we get Jabari?

Milwaukee decides they don't want to pay Jabari a max this off-season so they want to get something for him now.

No idea if they want to do that though or if the Jazz would even be able to give them enough. But like Favors/Hood/1st round pick while taking back a guy like Teletovic (or basically any contract they want to get out of) as well. Probably/Maybe not enough, but I have no idea.

Very good points.

They could stretch Mahinmi, but they still have luxury issues for this year. Unless they want to dump a contributor towards their playoff chances (Morris), they need a Mahinmi deal.

As for Porter, I think he has an awful contract. But, if they could drop Mahinmi for an expiring and not have to stretch, they conceivably avoid luxury this year, re-sign Oubre in a couple years and maybe hit luxury once with a roster of Beal, Wall, Oubre and Porter as the core.

Washington intrigues me.

I feel like Jabari is super overrated. I’m not sure he was worth the full max before all the injuries... add in all we would trade to get him and the injuries... I just dont get the infatuation.

Yep, there are lots of 21 year olds that put up an efficient 20 ppg that can make create for themselves.
