Big News Out of BYU??

Is it possible that BYU is playing the MWC, the way Texas played the Big 12?

Very possible. But unless they get a new TV contract out of it or somehow miraculously go to the Big 12, it all blew up in their face. They've lost a lot of their leverage in the last day or so.

Aside from football, what really matters? That's right, men's basketball. While the WCC isn't anyone's first choice, it is not the bottom of the barrel by any stretch of the imagination (basketball wise, it's not much of a drop, if any, from the MWC). The WCC would be just tickled to have BYU.

See response to above quote. Just going independent in football is going to make enough difference to negate any drop off in the other sports. It's all about the money.

the WCC is not a downgrade from the MWC? Is that what you are saying? Because if so there is no help for you.

the WCC has Gonzaga and a bunch of nobodies whose entire schools fit inside most basketball stadiums for teams in the MWC. Actually in some cases you could fit 3 WCC schools entire student body in gym's for MWC schools. Going to play in the WCC is a huge drop off in every sport for BYU. Not to mention I believe BYU would have to out and out cancel a decent # of sports programs because the WCC does not even have them.

Yep if BYU was trying to "Texas" the MWC conference they failed miserably. The MWC played BYU and won. Now what's left is a bunch of crappy choices.

1. leave anyway and tell the rest of their sports teams that they are crap and don't matter and they are stuck with the WCC. Probably losing Dave Rose as their coach in the meantime.

2. Tuck their tail between their legs and crawl back to the crappy league they were trying to leave, pretty much announcing that they got out maneuvered by the same moron that signed the deal with comcast.

I was talking specifically about men's basketball, and I said "not much of a drop, if any". Which is true. I don't know if you care to whip up a list of all the basketball powerhouses in the MWC, but... You may be better served taking a second to read carefully, rather than being such a condescending *** to everyone who doesn't happen to share your point of view.

The Mountain West sent twice as many teams as the WCC to the NCAA tournament last year, and they do that pretty much every year. It's ridiculous to say the WCC is anything but a huge dropoff in basketball from the MWC.

The MWC was actually 5th in terms of conferences sending the most teams.

Big East: 8
Big 12: 7
ACC: 6
Big 10: 5
Mountain West: 4

Way down that list is WCC: 2

I just can't believe Hair Thompson and the rest of the MWC got one over on BYU. Once they figured out that BYU was working behind their backs to screw them over, the MWC then beat them at their own game.

It's been a stunningly delightful 2 days.

While I agree with you that the WCC is a drop off, let me point out the obvious flaw in your reasoning: if BYU had been in the WCC, then the count would have been MWC 3, WCC 3.

I don't think so. I think if BYU had been in the WCC, then some other MWC team goes to the tourney and some WCC team misses it.

A conference in the MWC that routinely gets 2-3 bids to the NCAA compared to a WCC that gets 1 maybe 2 in an extremely weak year in NCAA basketball or if Gonzaga does not win the tourney. That is a huge downgrade. And going from playing in 10,000 to 20,000 seat stadium to 2000 to 8000 seat stadiums is also a huge down grade. Basically they are going from playing in the Huntsman center to playing at SLCC.

So I read what you said and it's still a naive and stupid statement.

Correct. If BYU played in the WCC they replace one of the 2 that did. While the MWC may or may not have had 4 they would still have had 3 either way.
