Both. Continuing negotiations with the MWC are the likely reason that nothing has been announced yet, but BYU is said to be standing firm on every concession they want so they don't appear to be hesitant to go Independent when they clock strikes 12 if they don't get what they want. Who knows how much of that is just a tactic. Maybe the MWC will call them on it.

It would be nice if the fairy tale scenario of Notre Dame/BYU to the Big 12 were announced right now - that would be a perfect **** you to the MWC commish, but maybe more probable a few years down the road. I still think the Super Conferences that the Pac 10 was trying to pull off are the future of college football though.

In other news, BYU is going to use a two quarterback system this year. Ugh.....

There is zero chance Notre Dame joins the Big 12. If they join any conference, it would either be the Big 10 (likely) or the Big East.

I still think BYU has to agree to play on Sundays before the Big 12 would take them too. It will be interesting to see how this all plays out.

I think the Big 12's advantage would simply be that they would allow ND to remain on their own TV deal, whereas the Big 10 wouldn't. But like I said, I'm with you, I don't think Notre Dame will ever join a conference until those super conferences really start forming. I think BYU is actually trying to hump some legs right now so they don't get left out when those eventually come to pass.

Utah will freeze over before that happens. I think a few conferences would like BYU for their sports program, but are afraid that every gay right's group in the nation will picket the games if/when they're invited - or go after the TV advertisers.

Just in case everyone needs reminding, BYU created the "horrible MWC contract." They have a habit of creating athletic messes then leaving them for the schools with limited funding to live with.

I am glad to know that some feel the key to saving the MWC is to bring in Utah State, BYUs co-destructor, to make the 12 team conference. Based on the revealed emails, Kustra would probably take an ice-pick to the eye before casting his vote for that action (yes, he has a vote). Also, BYU would love to bring in USU to the MWC, lock everyone into a 25 mil buyout, then at the first sign of an extra dollar, bail. This would leave the rest of the conference to deal with USU's President to make secret treaties with what's left of the WAC to destroy the rest of college athletics as we know it.

As a former Aggie, I think Logan and USU is one of the best kept secrets, but I didn't know they hired George L. Tirebiter as the USU President (if you don't know George, you weren't there). Also, I am seriously considering 2% less as a BYU penalty. BYU should go independent. Independent from the Church and my support. This is all BYU's fiasco because they can't face being the church school it was designed to be. I have never been a BYU hater. I always justified their actions, but this secret combination, Godfather II, self-serving act deserves my regard no more.

BYU going independent will not have any effect on the "survival" of the MWC. The MWC needed BYU, Utah, TCU and BSU to become AQ. Now that Utah left, AQ is way far off. The only chance is getting Houston (NOT USU) to fill out the 12 team conference. Yes, BYU will have to stay for that to be even a remote possibility. I would rather be non-AQ than appear to beg BYU to stay. Houston will help solidify keeping TCU for a few more years. Regardless, the MWC will survive and maybe be better. It is not the same conference that made the "horrible contract" especially if BYU bolts. BSU and TCU (who were not in the conference when BYU brokered the contract) may have some designs on making modifications. They are definitely more trusted by most schools than BYU (see results of Aug 18, 2010).

But, it's not over yet. Who know what secret deal BYU will come up with next to claim their rightful throne over all the teams that regularly beat them on the football field. I don't but I am sure it will be entertaining.

Just in case you weren't aware, Utah AND BYU jointly hired an attorney to investigate the deal. So it isn't just on the head of BYU as you imply. If anything, you should state that UTAH created the athletic mess and then fled the scene of the crime, leaving those other schools with limited funding to live with it. Also, the latest part of the TV deal was entirely Thompson's doing. BYU officials asked to see a copy of the contract, but Thompsom refused. BYU had to fly out lawyers - at BYU's expense - to review the contract. So yeah, I'd say BYU has the right to be a bit steamed.

I don't think Utah or BYU should feel too bad about this. While it was really stupid for both schools to enter into this TV deal, they've done more than their fair share of putting food in the mouths of teams like Wyoming, New Mexico, etc.

Not to mention the fact that Utah has brought BCS money to Mountain West schools twice now. While I'm sure BYU and TCU enjoyed those paychecks, they didn't really need it. On the other hand, it was probably a major coup for all of the lesser schools in the conference to get free BCS cash.

I still can't figure out why BYU and Utah agreed to the TV deal because they were the 2 teams that it hurt the worst. Nobody wants to pay Wyoming $1.3 million per year to put their games on TV. Even if Utah and BYU are both gone from the MWC in 2011, all of those **** schools should thank them for the "mess" that was created for them. They would have either continued to rot in a bloated WAC Conference or had been banished to the Sun Belt if Utah and BYU hadn't been the driving forces behind building the MWC.

Utah was definitely involved in creating the mess and I am sure they were laughing as they accepted the PAC-10 invite. But the reason BYU got their lawyers involved was to ensure the contract restricted play on Sundays and had very limited play during the week. Sundays were restricted for obvious reasons, but BYU saw that ESPN was doing more and more games during the week. They felt they would have better student athletes (focused on school) if there were limited or no games during the week. Most people can see this as a good reason for this BYU demand. And, in fact, ESPN does more and more games during the week and even on Sundays if they can schedule teams that attract viewers. Also, BYU and Utah gave general instructions to the MWC to find the best contract to achieve their demands.

The big complaint is now BYU is working secret combination to get out of the contract that the MWC got just to satisfy their demands. They did their secret tricks before in the Denver Airport and now expect the rest of college athletics to bow to their supremacy. Everyone sees it. They see the emails. They see the chaos they cause. So if they go independent (please do), they go with the WCC or the WAC with teams like New Mexico State, San Jose, USU and Idaho. Don't expect LA Tech to stay around (C-USA) or Hawaii (ind). Even if they all play the fill in games in Provo, I am sure the everyone will be happy to see the Vandals come in to LE Stadium in the middle of November when everyone else is steeped in games that matter. Try to get a top ten from that at the end of the year. Perpetual "Las Vegas bowl, here comes the Cougs."

It looks like we'll get the chance to see if your scenario plays out like that. Most "insider" reports have BYU still hell-bent on going independent. While I think staying in the MWC and adding Houston is a much better option for them, it's easy to see why they don't want to return. Just my opinion, but it's almost impossible for BYU to return to the MWC while saving any face what so ever.

As much as I hate BYU and would like nothing more than to see them suffer, I don't think being independent will force them to play the likes Idaho in the middle of November on a yearly basis, but on the flip side they're obviously not going to have the pull that somebody like Notre Dame does when it comes to scheduling. BYU haters seem to think a move to independence is going to make them fall flat on their *** while BYU lovers seem to think that everything is going to be magical once they break free from the MWC and chart their own course.

As is usually the case, the truth probably lies somewhere in the middle........

Out of curiosity, who do you see BYU playing late in the season if they go independent?

All the good teams will be playing conference schedules late in the season. It will be the Idahos and San Jose States of the world that would like to bring BYU in to help with ticket sales.
