What's new

Butler

Ellis and green both have valid points.

Yes, by all means trade any asset not named Hayward, Gobert, Favors or Exum to get a 5th stud starter. You only need a rotation of 8-9. We have that.

1. Priority #1 is to upgrade your starters if possible. I think DL will try that. He won't trade Exum, but he could bring in someone else who is ready right now to make the starting unit better. Exum then develops as a backup - or maybe even starts but plays backup minutes. Kind of like they are doing right now. Trey is averaging about 30 mins and Exum 24. In that scenario, it would be replacing Trey with someone who shoots better and shares the ball. I hate watching Trey who thinks he's the best ISO player in the league. And puts up shots with 6 seconds remaining when they're trying to get the last shot. SHARE the DAMN BALL! The other option is to bump Alec to a 6th man role. He would be fantastic, IMO. But again, not with Trey on the team.

2. Upgrade the bench. Need another big even IF Booker remains. Ingles, Hood and Millsap are decent, but could use an established player, especially of the "3&D" variety in case Hood ISN'T the answer or continues to have injury problems. Ingles and Millsap become deep subs.

IMO

Burke is gone sooner or later

One of Burks and Booker is gone probably Booker.

Those are our trade chips. As much as I like Booker I think he might be the piece that gets a deal done.

He's never shown a particular affinity for defense.

I've always thought he's a pretty solid defender, not Butler or Kawhi level, but not Stauskus level neither. Plus he's only had played a handful of games this season, DL has always preached patience. I don't think we've even scratched the surface of who Hood can be yet. To me his floor is at least a 3 and D guy.

But, I'm looking for complimentary pieces now. I'm looking for a solid backup Center, like Kosta Koufos. I'm looking for a starting 3&D wing, like Snell, Middleton, Matthews. I'm looking for a veteran backup PG. I like Burks or Burke to man the second unit. If I can flip one for a 3&D player, I'll do it (like Burke to Chicago, who needs a PG, for Snell).

He's just never been a 3 and D guy on any level before this. His identity as a player before this level was that he was an exceptionally poor defender.

You can only play 5 players at a time. And as great and fun as depth is, you need to know who you're going to close games with on a nightly basis. This is especially poignant if you're as down on Burks as everyone seems to be around here.

Why is someone "down" on Burks if they think he is sixth man of the year? Does Dallas win a title without JJ Barea?

I'd close games with: Exum, Hayward, Favors, Gobert. The fifth guy would depend on matchups and how the game is going. If Burks has been playing well, then close with him. If our 3&D guy has been rocking it, go that way. Heck, if we are down 5 and Hood has been stroking it, close with him.

From all the draft reports I had read about Hood were that he was an OK defender who has the potential to be a halfway decent defender. He's definitely not 3 & D but to call him awful on defense isn't true either. I've actually seen him play some decent defense for the Jazz - I din't think he'll ever known for his defense but he can play it well enough to the point where he's not being objectified by the other team for his lack of defensive skills.

You don't think he can shoot the 3? Or don't you think he can play D?

1) I watched Hood quite a bit in college. I know his game pretty well.

2) He sucks at defense.

3) On a team of terrible defenders, he was one of the worst despite having a larger skillset than the majority of his opponents.

4) He has struggled shooting so far, but he is a good shooter. Hopefully he starts getting in a groove again.

5) He's soft, physically and mentally. He has the tools to be really good, but I don't think he will be.

6) Once again, you didn't answer the question. Why did/do you think he can be a 3 and D player?

Exactly. Just depends on what is needed most: points or maintaining a lead. And sometimes switches can be made on successive possessions. Snyder did that a few times with Kanter and Gobert. Pissed Enes off, apparently, but it was good coaching.

There hasn't been one level of play where he's looked like even an average defender. He was terrible at Duke. I think it would be more accurate to say his ceiling is a 3 and D guy, rather than saying that's his floor.

Honestly kkkkkk, did you watch him at all in college?

Ceiling might be a young Steve NovaK?

Hood can play D, don't let these clowns fool you. He is recovering from an injury, you can't expect his D to be on point right now.

He couldn't defend at Duke cuz Duke sucks at defense as a team. He was a good defender at MSU.
