BYU Football 2012

I've heard that Sorenson isn't very receptive to coaches. He thinks he knows it all and doesn't listen to anybody.

Judging by his suckiness he really REALLY needs to start listening to his coaches...

I'm tired of watching most college and NFL teams make kicking 40+ yard FG's a walk in the park while extra points are even in question when BYU kicks...

Having a good reliable kicker completely changes the game. Knowing that you'll come away with points once you cross a certain part of the field makes it so much easier for a OC to call the game and for the QB to manage.

Instead, for BYU, it's as if they feel like they aren't going to get any points unless they score a TD. I don't blame them. It has been forever... Since the Crowton years when you had a reliable kicker... Payne? Was that his name? The dude who hit hard and kicked well?

And it's not like BYU's kickers are even coming close to making these FGs... They're horribly off comical! Like Nelson's attempts at throwing the deep ball...

They had a couple of Paynes, Matt and Mitch. I don't recall who was better.

Sorenson was on track to have a pretty good career. He has not been the same since his injury.

I don't know. How many times did they go play action with Nelson rolling to the backside just to find a defender in his grill for a 10 yard loss? At least half a dozen that I can think of.

That's not necessarily on the play calling. That's on the blocker of said defender. Although, if the blocker keeps getting beat on that play, eventually you have to stop calling that play.
The final scoring play of ND killed me. They had been setting up that end around for about 6 plays in a row. EVERYBODY knew it was coming, except 10 of BYU's defenders. The one guy was in position to make the tackle, but missed it.

I hate that play, and it's only half because Riley is the QB. The QB is backwards and sees nothing, then turns around... no chance to salvage the play if it's broken. One of the times there were two guys in his face when he turned around. If the blocking is good it can work, but I still don't see the point of having your QB facing the wrong way with the ball... ever.

On track meaning he was pretty good in high school? He hasn't done anything at BYU. So he has been off track since beginning college. Also whomever said he isn't very receptive to coaches : He is a god damn kicker! What are they coaching him on. Shouldn't he already know how to kick? Its not like he has to learn a scheme or to make reads or anything like that.

They don't block the d end on that play, they count on him at least making a feeble attempt at going for the RB allowing nelson to roll out behind him. It works well for other teams. Nelsons play action must be awful, because the d end never even considers the RB.

Yea, the run defense and tackling was really bad again. Play Oregon St and Notre Dame and suddenly the D is middle of the pack again.
They are still good, just not as good as advertised. All the other teams they played suck.

Utah St. has a more than decent offense. Losing the 2 poly d lineman (Dulan and Manamaleuna I think ) has killllllllled them. They were really big losses. Now Ziggy is forced to play tackle when he is obviously a d end and they have 2 freshman who weigh like 25o playing interior line now. That has really hurt the run d.

... made a school-record 48 of 48 PATs ... averaged 66.6 yards per kickoff and recorded 17 touchbacks ... made 15 field goals including eight 30+ yard field goals and five over 40 yards ... was a perfect 3 of 3 on field goals at Texas, making 30, 32 and 33 yard attempts ... made a season-long 46-yard field goal vs. Utah ... made a 42-yard and 45-yard field goal, along with all 3 PAT attempts vs. San Jose State.

This was all after he was hurt. His freshman season he had 32 touchbacks. The kid had ability.

Georgia Tech is in the middle of installing a new defense. That's good and bad for BYU. Center Hansen is out which will definitely hurt. But BYU traditionally does well against run-heavy option-scheme teams. Despite Riley's efforts, Cougs should win a close one and not lose again this year.

Interesting stat from the paper yesterday: the BYU-Notre Dame game got a higher TV rating than all of Notre Dame's games last year but one.

BYU should beat GT. The defense has been great giving up 0 third down conversions and no points. GT has only scored via its defense on a pick 6 and with a kickoff return for a TD.
