BYU to the Big 12 discussion???

Incidentally, I see Ron Abegglan at football games fairly regularly. When I first saw him around three years ago, it looked like he had aged about 40 years since he last coached.

I was best friends with his grandson growing up. We went to a lot of games and also met a lot of players. I was about 9 or 10 so it was pretty cool to meet these guys you just watched play.

Is this the first thread in the history of the Internet to be hi-jacked by Weber State talk? Harold "the show" Arceneaux bitches.

Interesting to see that BYU and Boise just inked a 12 year deal to continue playing each other. Even more interesting is that all of the game dates are in October. If BYU felt they would eventually land in a conference, why schedule Boise during the time of year that you would be playing conference games? Or does this maybe mean that Boise is also on the Big 12's radar and both schools just feel as if these games will morph into conference match-ups?

That is interesting.

I think BYU and Boise St to the Big 12 is a HUGE ****ing no brainer for the Big 12, though. As it stands, they're going to be three schools short to even meet their conference name (the Big 10 actually has 12 schools, funny thing) or to have a conference championship game. If the Big 12's way of filling out doesn't involve pillaging or merging out-right with the Big East, Boise St. and BYU are the most likely high(er) profile schools to join. They can talk until they're blue in the face about grabbing Notre Dame, but it ain't happening. And even if it was... they need THREE schools. And that's without Mizzou or any other schools defecting.

BYU has NOTHING to lose by joining a BCS conference that might dissolve. And BSU has... what... losing the MWC as a risk? Sounds like victory to me.

New Rumor verified on a few sites (Not ESPN or anything but sites)

BYU
TCU
West Virginia
Cincinatti

Those are the 4 teams that are accepted in the big 12. Doesn't make sense though with Mizzu staying put according to the Intern Big 12 president just this morning. That would give them 13 teams. Could Boise be thrown in as well to take it to 14 teams?

You're forgetting Louisville in your grouping. I hope that happens though, that's a nasty conference with a nice balance between good basketball and good football.

I think Boise is the team that will replace Missouri if they happen to jump ship.

If the Big 12 pulled something like that off, I'd have to say they did a great job of keeping their conference viable. With that being said, when BYU and West Virginia play each other, that's one hell of a roadie for the visiting team.

Like was mentioned, I like Louisville in the Big 12. I think they're a better fit than either Cincy or West Virginia. I think TCU may finally actually have a real shot at getting invited this time. Salty and I debated this a few weeks ago, and while it has always been the case that the Texas schools in the Big 12 have never wanted TCU, the idea of saving the conference and adding long term stability has made some people reconsider. Although I did read an article on ESPN this morning where a Big 12 "source" stated that there is still oposition from some schools in regards to TCU, he believes it to be softening.

I think if you add BYU you should strongly look at adding Boise. They would become immediate natural rivals and my guess is it could get even nastier than the Utah-BYU rivalry. Instead of Utahns bickering with other Utahns, you'd have Idaho-V-Utah and quite frankly, it's really fun to fight with Idaho if you ask me.

Good for BYU. I hope they make this official soon. Both schools deserve to be in big conferences for once.

Why would the Big 12 be opposed to TCU joining as oppose to Houston (one of the programs rumored to be high on the list of teams to keep under consideration)? I'm genuinely asking.

Before there were excuses about TCU's religious standing. Since that flew out the window when they considered BYU, it is now apparently about the conference not wanting to be too Texas centric.

Okay.

But it seems Houston has been considered in all of this mess and they don't have a particularly good sports program to their name (to my knowledge).

I think having concerns about being too Texas centric is legitimate, but TCU probably has the best local market in Texas and a great football program. If they're concerned about being too Texas-centric, kick Baylor out (even though they've had good FB and b-ball seasons as of late for the first time in 30 years).

I figured TCU should be a shoe in. They have obviously proven they have an adequate football program. BTW, their Baseball program is pretty good as well. Anyway, I am pleased with the rumors that BYU will finally be in a big conference as well.

IMO, the hangup with TCU is simply TV market. I know there are some who don't agree with this, but that's my take on it. The Big 12 already has the Dallas/Ft. Worth market locked up with Texas (although that may have changed with this new Longhorn network not being as available as everybody hoped).

Color me in the camp of, "Who Cares". This whole thing makes me like college football even less.

TV is exactly right, as well as recruiting. Schools like Texas and Oklahoma rule the Dallas/Ft. Worth area in terms of recruiting. Allowing TCU to walk in doors with the Big 12 logo on their shirt creates an uncomfortable situation for the other Big 12 schools.

Just like you said, the Big 12 already feels like they have a stranglehold on the Dallas TV market (and they do). Why would the surrounding schools vote in a school that brings in no new TV's, yet makes it that much harder to recruit? That used to make complete sense in the past, but as the landscape of college football changes, you have to make concessions. The Big 12 is now trying to do whatever it can to get some stability to the point where Texas/Oklahoma want to keep this thing together. I still don't think TCU is their first choice, but it may boil down to inviting them anyway.

Everyone keeps saying TV Market this.. TV Market that.

Let me ask this question...

Is the Boise TV market that much worse than Missouri's, Ole Miss, Mississippi State, Washington State, Oregon State, Arizona, ect?

I am not sure the BIG 12 feels that Boise State is viable as a football program going forward. This is Kellen Moore's last year I believe and the football program is already facing sanctions. What does the school offer outside of football? You could say the same about BYU, but I would argue that BYU has a richer history in football and a pretty decent history in basketball.
