Can the Dante Exum Experiment Please End

The thing that bugs me the most about exum is how flat his shot still is. I understand that he hasn't been able to really work on it much but it has got to get better. I'm pretty confident that he will improve in other areas but his jump shot is so ****in ugly.

I think his shot and his handle should be better than they are right now. He's behind. You can do a lot to work on both of those things while you're rehabbing a knee. Not everything; but a lot.

I've broadcast how I'm not going to allow myself to firmly judge Exum's potential until the end of this year or the middle of next. He's just so raw. But I'd be lying if I didn't admit that his backslide on defense, and his lagging handle + shot didn't have me pretty worried. He's showed some nice flashes on offense this year. My inner optimist is hanging onto those things.

Lol. Bunch of damn complainers. Beginning of the year everyone was excited about the way Exum was playing. Now he had a few bad games it's get rid of him. I find it hilarious too that you all forget we said the same about Hayward, Favors, and Gobert their rookie years. Never change kiddos.

At the beginning of the year a lot of people, point blank, put unfair expectations on him. The dude might end up developing into a fine player, but it was never going to happen in November.

He looks like a talented player who terribly inexperienced. He can consistently get into the paint and his jumper looks better to me. Now his jumper doesn't go in enough and he makes tons of mistakes once he gets into the paint. Defensively he reacting too quickly to screens and moves out of position. Seriously the guy just needs to play and learn from his mistakes. Now that doesn't matchup with our win-now push.

I am moving towards he just needs to play for the SLC Stars for a while to get used to what he can do.

Thank you for responding, wish I knew how to rep if that's still a thing. This basically validates my feelings. Due to the fact that he not only made a huge jump in competition, is still young/inexperienced, & is coming off of a serious injury, common sense would suggest that he needs more time than the average prospect.

From what I've seen he looks like he def has the physical tools to be a top 5/10 PG. Not sure how I'd feel about him playing in the D-League but understand & agree with the sentiment. Also agree that he doesn't fit our win-now philosophy at all. Just don't see how we get equal value in return at this point. Hope QS is able to balance getting him enough playing time while focusing on winning as I still see tremendous potential- in not just Exum but this year's roster (when healthy)

Andy Larsen did a great job explaining it here

tl;dr: Defenses completely sag off of Exum and basically makes our offense a 4 on 5. Jazz are concerned about retaining Gordon and are in win now mode. Decision made to bench Exum.

Thank you for posting, wish I could rep. Haven't read yet but will. Makes complete sense (from your tldr). Still seems like a short-sighted move to trade him now due to current value vs potential unless Hayward is really on the fence about re-signing as we are pretty much in a position where we have to do whatever possible (within reason) to retain him. Seems like the best move may be to get him as much playing time as possible without costing the team wins until we Hayward makes a decision.

simple.

exum doesn't help spread the floor.

he barely attacks inside.
he cant hit any shots.

so the other teams defense doesn't have to do **** but clutter the paint.

I'd like to see Exum drive the ball when he gets it kicked to him and he is wide open for a 3. It might create something, I just have no faith in his open 3's right now. Needs to watch some Rondo film on how to be useful on offense who you have 0 shooting ability.
