Cavs offer Gordo MAX deal (maybe)

I wonder what kind of offers Klay Thompson and Kawhi Leonard will command next year as they are both RFAs. Wonder if they jazz have any chance of snagging one of them.

Question:

Say the Jazz do not want to wait for Hayward and decide to sign someone else like Parsons. Can the Jazz simply renounce their RFA rights to Hayward and let him become an unrestricted FA? How does that work?

Yes, the Jazz can renounce their rights to Hayward. See here:

A team may relinquish its right of first refusal, making the player an unrestricted free agent. If a qualifying offer is outstanding, the team can withdraw it unilaterally through July 23. It can be withdrawn after July 23 if the player consents, in which case the player is also renounced as a free agent5 (see question number 41). If a qualifying offer is not outstanding, then a team can relinquish its right of first refusal at any time by providing written notice.

Maybe they should do that anyway :) If he gets a max contract, it is because another team will feel they have to offer that to pull him from us, not that he is worth that $$$ offered. No team would overpay him to the extent they will knowing they will have not to make an offer big enough we won't match.

However, there is a good chance he goes somewhere else. But if he really cares about $, the Jazz would have $ to re-sign him.

He got that contract after he helped the Mavs get a title. He may have been bad last year but that was an easy contract to give out.

I don't disagree. And I think a change of scenery back to Dallas could maybe get 2-3 good years back out of him.

I just read a tweet that most GMs think Parsons will be easier to get because Houston is looking to sign a third big star (and Utah is not). Why not go after Parsons? If he agrees, great. If Houston matches we could still match any offers received for Hayward, right? And we can afford to keep both of them if Hayward ultimately takes the QO.

They should at least reach out to Parsons. I think he is a better fit at the 3 anyway.

Ok, let me just say that some of you are certifiable. Anyone who thinks we should even consider matching a max deal for Gordon is out of their friggin mind. There is some merit to the idea that Utah will have to overpay someone at some point in order to get good players here. However, Utah is not anywhere near that point. It would be different if we had a young team on the verge of getting past the first round. In that case, it might make some sense.

Unfortunately, we are nowhere close to that, and giving someone like Gordon a max deal would be foolish, IMO. Free agency is in no way a reason to overpay Gordo. That cap space can be used in trades to either get a good player or acquire assets such as picks by selling our cap space. I know some of you are in love with Gordo, but if it comes down to a max deal, that decision should be a no-brainer. I only pray that our FO isn't going to make short term moves in order to sell tickets, because that would be the only reason for matching silly money to keep G-time.

From ESPN's Amin Elhassan's chat today:

Davis (Boston)

would Gordon Hayward be the worst max contract player ever?
Amin (3:25 PM)

Brian Grant once signed a $93M/7 yr deal.

So you're saying there's a chance?
