Cavs offer Gordo MAX deal (maybe)

Geesh..why the hostility. Wouldn't we all want to get the most $$$ at our jobs.

Trust me, in corporate america the best people don't always make the most money.

I personally think all this max talk is his agent.

My guess is Jazz sign in at 12/year. we'll see.

I'm rooting for him.

Some reporter from Cleveland was on 1280 today saying that no way Cleveland offered a max deal to Hayward. He said that it was probably more like a 3-year deal at around $7 million/year. Hans and his side-kick have been playing the audio several times today on 1280.

Sometimes it’s better to just keep quiet than to say something that could come back to bite you.

Gordon Hayward had this little nugget about Cleveland in an interview following practice on February 25th, 2014. He was asked about his favorite and least-favorite places to play in the NBA.

Least favorite, I would say, like, especially since I’ve been in the league, probably Cleveland. Cleveland to me is like Gotham City. It’s, like, so dreary, and just, I don’t know, and then ever since LeBron [James] left, I mean, the fans, they’re starting to pick up a little bit more, but I remember my rookie year, there was hardly anybody there.

So, that makes for a tough atmosphere when you have to go on the road, and you know, there’s absolutely no energy given to you, and there’s not even any energy in the building given to them, hardly either, so that’s a tough place to play.

At 7 M a year no wonder they were worried the Jazz would match. That would be a no-brainer match. And a big thanks would be owed to the Cavs by the Jazz if he accepted.

Ok, let me just say that some of you are certifiable. Anyone who thinks we should even consider matching a max deal for Gordon is out of their friggin mind. There is some merit to the idea that Utah will have to overpay someone at some point in order to get good players here. However, Utah is not anywhere near that point. It would be different if we had a young team on the verge of getting past the first round. In that case, it might make some sense.

Unfortunately, we are nowhere close to that, and giving someone like Gordon a max deal would be foolish, IMO. Free agency is in no way a reason to overpay Gordo. That cap space can be used in trades to either get a good player or acquire assets such as picks by selling our cap space. I know some of you are in love with Gordo, but if it comes down to a max deal, that decision should be a no-brainer. I only pray that our FO isn't going to make short term moves in order to sell tickets, because that would be the only reason for matching silly money to keep G-time.

Question:

Say the Jazz do not want to wait for Hayward and decide to sign someone else like Parsons. Can the Jazz simply renounce their RFA rights to Hayward and let him become an unrestricted FA? How does that work?

Why would they do this? They could offer Parsons then just match an offer that Hayward gets if they want. Not that I think they should. But the Jazz are under the cap and can go over it to retain Hayward.

I'm indeed one of those who are in love with Gordo, but holy cow, max deal for Hayward? That's beyond insanity.

A rumor on hoops hype (I put it in the FA thread) says the Jazz think Hayward will make a jump and so they are not worried about paying him top dollar.

For one, if the process drags out too long where Hayward is still waiting for a max offer from someone...Why should the Jazz put their life on hold for him? If there's another player they like they'll have to act fast. Then there's no need to keep Hayward anymore...he snoozes, he loses. If we have Parsons wtf do we need Hayward for?

That is the point. The Jazz have enough room to sign other pieces and still match any other offer Hayward may get. I can't see a single reason for them to relinquish his rights. Unless they plan on signing a couple of other guys to max contracts.
