I'd be pumped w/ either Exum or A. Gordon at 5. I do however think the Snyder hire requires a PnR specialist at the point, though. But, there is nothing that says Exum can't become better at that. On the other hand, the Snyder hire also requires a pg who can play w/ pace...

Can Trey play faster?
Can Exum run 65 + sets of PnR a night?

If Trey can run, A. Gordon starts to make a lot of sense for what Snyder is talking about (running, defense, PnR, passing) in all of his interviews of late.

If you believe A. Gordon can shoot, and is already showing improvement, who has higher upside, Exum, or A. Gordon?

So much rep to be handed with the last few posts. I've been too much of a rep whore, spreading it out everywhere. I'll get back to this thread in 24 hours.

From what I've seen of his shooting, which is basically the Hoops summit, highlight footage including 1 or 2 full games from the U17 and U19 tournaments, and a full game vs Aussie HS competition. His jumpshot at this point in effectiveness is comparable to a John Wall, Derrick Rose Westbrook, or Carter-Williams meaning a click or 2 above Rajon Rondo. Exum's FT% id expect to be around 65%. Not only does he need to improve his effectiveness, he needs to get his shot off much quicker. From what i understand his shot is improving though, it should be very interesting to hear about his shooting from workouts.

Escum's shot is far from broke. I guarantee he shoots much higher than 65% free throws.

I like Harris, but he is an average athlete tweener who isn't a particularly good shooter. Vonleh would be a huge upgrade to him in terms of upside at the PF position and they can grab Ennis or Payton to play PG (who are both more natural PG's than Smart/Exum).

It makes a ton of sense to me if they aren't that sold on Exum/Smart or are really sold on Vonleh.

I'm not fond of Ennis, and I think Elfrid is a complete reach for the 12th pick. Compare that with drafting the likes of Exum and Stauskas, for example (assuming his Stauk doesn't keep climbing).

I could see that debate going either way. Exum can play 1 or 2, but what if he doesn't thrive w/ PnR as much as he needs to under Snyder, doesn't that make him a 2? Exum & Burks are both 6'6" w/ 6'10" wingspans who excel at getting to the rack, but struggle w/ shooting. Burks has higher FT% than Exum as well. Not saying they're same player at all, but they do share some similar qualities if Exum is forced to be a 2.

Also, if Exum is a 2, then his shot becomes more important, and when you couple that w/ his lack of defensive instincts/ knowledge, he can seem less appealing. We'd have Hayward, Burks, and Exum at the 2, all of which who can create for others, but none of which who can shoot.

Have to make absolutely certain Snyder is confident he can teach Exum to run PnR's w/ the best of them, or else...

That's when A. Gordon starts to look really attractive, especially if you believe his shot is already improving (which is what has been said by those who've seen him workout). As is, Gordon brings a lot of appealing things to a system like the one Snyder is talking about. He plays w/ pace, he defends, he makes the right read, he doesn't stop the ball, he makes great passes, he can be put in the PnR and demand to be guarded w/ his ability to get to the hoop, looks to be able to hit from the outside, can rebound, can lead a fast break, can put the ball on the floor, etc. wing creators are a very rare and valuable thing in the league. He has all the tools to be one. Hayward was in top 7% of wing creators last year (per Locke), so pairing him w/ yet another makes for some very interesting offensive options, especially if Kanter is drawing a big and stretching the floor.


I'll be happy w/ either, but without an up close and personally directed look at Exum, it does make the pick a little scarier. I think both offer enough to at least be serviceable starters, and both have legit star potential. The question is who will make you better and lets you play how you want to play. Exum could be that guy, but his agent is 't giving us the opportunity to peal away some of that mystery.
