Chad Ford: the Jazz consider Dante Exum their franchise player

Kevin Pelton(4:21 PM)

If you were going to pick a most likely best player from this year's draft right now, I think it would have to be Exum, as David Thorpe said last week: https://insider.espn.go.com/nba/story/_/id/11872465/top-20-rookies

So exciting to be a jazz fan right now. Awesome coach, awesome potential star, a border line allstar small forward, and a decent big man.

Also, I think it says a lot for exum that the Jazz think that highly of him. I think the Jazz are pretty honest with themselves, so I pretty much believe them when they say they think they have a franchise player on their hands. Now we just need to win the lottery and draft that giant who is playing for duke.

Apparently Oladipo had a lot to do with it.

Still dumb, with a little poker, they could have landed their man plus assets by putting the pick on the market and getting assets from the Jazz for the pick swap. All they had to do was convince the Jazz that they would pick Exum but the pick could be had for the right price. But instead, they leaked the pick (as we learned from watching the Kings war room).

OK, but all indications are that the Jazz were happy to pick Gordon anyway (he came for a 2nd workout) so what you're saying could be a mute point irregardless.

"All indications" -- not sure I agree. DL had a man crush and I believe they would have given up assets to move up.

Don't get me wrong. This gets me excited as all hell. But I still am very, very concerned about his lack of explosiveness to the rim. For a guy who's 6'6", he really struggles to get off the ground and I can't help but think virtually all It factor guys have this.

I'm not expecting Exum to slash much until he bulks up. Exum isn't gonna be a star overnight but IMO he has the highest upside of any of the lottery picks in the draft. Just needs time and experience, gotta remember he was playing Australian high school kids last year

Yeah, I'm tired of him and his weak bone structure. The strength of his bones was Totally overrated!

This is so true, but it really isn't about his weak little girl bones. I have nothing against Gordon as a player. This is about my belief in Exum. I believe there may be 2 or 3 teams who kick themselves for passing on Exum, regardless of how well their picks turn out.

Also, regardless of what you think of Gordon as a player, you have to be concerned with this injury. It may end up being not a big deal, but it's also an injury that can be re-injured multiple times. Between Exum exceeding expectations and Gordon going down right out of the gate with injury that could plague his career, I'm stoked with the fact Orlando passed on Exum. Sue me.

Actually I live in Tucson and love me some Aaron Gordon. He is going to be a hell of a player, but a supplemental piece like Hayward is. That is where Orlando failed. They got two really nice supplemental pieces, but failed to get their breakout star. That is what that high draft choice was for. Even when you suck you don't always get that high of a pick and it is even rarer to get one in a loaded draft. There were four guys with that potential in the last draft, if you get a top 4 pick you get one of those guys. We were lucky to get one at 5 who may turn out to be the best of the bunch.
