Chicago picks are in play

The Bulls have made it known throughout the league one or both of their first-round picks in Thursday’s draft are available. In an attempt to save salary-cap space for additions this summer, the Bulls are trying to avoid adding two rookie-scale contracts. Chicago Tribune

We might not want more than a couple of picks from this draft, but I think we should we use our cap space to improve our positions or to collect assets for a run at the first pick. These are all rumors, but LA at 7 and Sacramento at 8 seem to be shopping their picks, and the Bulls at 16 and 19 and Houston at 25 are trying to clear space for Carmello. At the very least, I wouldn't mind moving up to 16 from 23.

These teams trying to clear space present a great opportunity for the Jazz. I can see Jazz 2014 second round pick + future second round pick + cash for Bulls 16 or 19 might be a good example, as the draft has players in the 10-20 range who would be top 5-10 in a typical draft.

Depends on who is available at 16.

I would target Rodney Hood and Elfrid Payton as two guys who could be available at 16 who are worth trading up for. If not, I would rather just wait at 23 and take Jordan Adams.

I dont think Payton or Hood will be on the board at 16. Another player that isnt expected to fall but i guess could is Stauskas.

I hope if they trade to 16, the picks Zach LaVine.

Let him stay on the D-league affiliate and light it up before he plays for the Jazz, if there's 2 or 3 other draft picks It wont affect anything. In next years draft theres a bunch of lanky SG's, Zach is hands down a better athlete than the whole crop, At 16, considering the youth and playoff chances of the Jazz, I dont see why he wouldn't be a great fit here.

I'd hope Nurkic, T.J. Warren, Tyler Ennis, James Young and Adreian Payne are also in play in that range, Also i dont mind Gary Harris outside of the lottery, hes an instant contributor.

Harris or Michigan's Peja would be excellent pickups as well.

IMO, the 23rd must be upgraded if we really hope to shore up some of our front court depth or shooting. If we go small then that 23rd must be upgraded to get a guy like Payne. If we go big at 5 then the 23rd must be upgraded to get us another wing/shooter.

I love me some LaVine and Payne. IMO, they have the best potential to be steals. They'll pan out better than many picks taken in the top 10 probably.

Or use 16 to sweeten the offer for #1. Favors/kanter, 5, and 16

Trade Kanter, Burks and #5 for #1 and future first. Draft Wiggins/Parker. Trade for Boozer, #16 and #19 for #23 and #35. Draft Payne and Lavine.

Burke, Neto
Hayward, Lavine
Wiggins, Hayward
Favors, Boozer, Payne
Tomic, Gobert

i agree.
hope we can trade up for lavine or payne.

at 23 im still liking KJ.

what range will tj warren get picked? mcdermott? stauskas?

lots to like in a very deep draft

Boozer('s salary) and the rights to Mirotic.

Yesss. Mirotic would be a nice grab. We might be able to get a pick, too.

And besides, isn't Boozer in a contract year? I'd love for him to be a point-grabbing sixth man and earn a paycheck elsewhere.

Since the internet is a good place for I-told-you-sos... I'll note here that I've been calling for Boozer for a while now. It makes sense.

If you can get Mirotic and a pick for the cap space rental, I'm not sure that you're going to get a better return for the cap space.

I'm liking this.

But can Boozer deny this trade from happening?
And how will that Boozer/SLC dynamic be?

In practice, all players own a no-trade-clause: outright ****ing refuse. If I were the Jazz and this were an option, I'd request permission to talk to Boozer before making it happen to make sure he signs off and has no illusions about what is happening.

The dynamic would be that classless tools would rain boos on him for a while. But if he just plays a lot of games and shows effort, he'll have kind of redeemed himself and I don't think that's valueless to him. Additionally, he'd have a chance to maybe play himself into a new contract (somewhere else, probably, but him as a sixth man for the right price would be a boon).

So maybe a real capologist can correct me and I'm sure that this has been hashed elsewhere many times, but the Jazz are going to have (or could very easily have) $30 million+ in cap space this offseason, right*? Saving Bulls ownership nearly $17 million on top of the cap ramifications (I say "on top of" because they can just amnesty Boozer, but they'd still have to pay him) has to be worth a lot to them and Jazz need to spend ~$25 million to get to the salary floor anyway (thus, the only expense to the Jazz is opportunity cost, unless of course, this is the best they could do).

And Boozer is really the only significant salary that they can just shed. I'm not sure how else they're supposed to responsibly save money to simultaneously stay under the LT and then also have the cap space to go after Carmelo or whoever.

* after renouncing rights on all players (why wouldn't they? They'd be below the cap and Bird Rights wouldn't matter), still picking up team options, and considering a ~$9 million cap hold on Hayward that puts them at ~$28 million in salary committed and the cap will surely be above $58 million.

Boos or not he'd be getting another payday either way.

I don't consider Boozer intelligent, but I think the salary dump concept is easy enough for him to comprehend. The jazz need to meet a minimum salary threshold, the bulls are tired of paying Boozer, so the bulls give the jazz 16, 19 and the Sacramento pick they got from Cleveland via the Luol Deng trade and the jazz take Snell, Dunleavy and boozers salaries. Richard Jefferson, Rush and Biedrens figured it out, booze will too.

Boos or not he'd be getting a raise regardless.

Fixed that for you.

But yes I support a Boozer salary dump. Also, I don't think anyone is going to boo him, unless you count people screaming "BOOOOOOOOOOZER!"

I also wouldn't mind drafting TJ Warren either. The Jazz might have to move up to get him at 16.
