The devil is in the details. China’s population peaked in 2022 and is falling. India is now the world’s most populous nation. The majority of China’s population right now, today, is too old to fight. China is dying.
As for the raw materials such as the so-called 'rare earths', China dominates supply because we let them. We have them here in the United States. There is a massive rare earths mine southwest of Las Vegas that is mostly idle. We could bring it fully online anytime we wanted, but the mining operation leaves toxic pollution. We let China pollute their lands and expose their workers to toxic substances for a slave's wages.
The reality is that we need China to be a rival because we work better when we have a rival, so we are puffing China up. It is smoke and mirrors.

Did you read your linked article? Here is the takeaway quote from it:
"Hong Kong’s role as a global financial hub and gateway to China for foreign companies has steadily waned as U.S. and other foreign businesses leave the city. A stampede of banks, investment firms and technology companies have left the city"
China is dying. The article is essentially warning not to be the last one to leave the dying city.
China's economy is really bad right now. Much worse than reported.

Honest reporting on the economy in China is illegal. Mintz Group is a due diligence firm who was ignoring official Chinese Communist Party statistics to present the real economic picture for their corporate clients. China raided their offices and fined them the equivalent of $1.5 million for "illegal statistical work".
When the story broke, and articles like the one from CNN above came out, China imposed even more fines. Not only is accurate reporting on the economy in China illegal, but it is also illegal to say "accurate reporting on the economy in China is illegal".
All the more reason for Xi to do something rash.
What Chinese company operates Australian prisons? For the the record i think no private company should operate prisons regardless of country of origin.
Almost all of the precursor chemicals used for the manufacture of methamphetamine which is awash in this country and ruining our young people originate in China.
Naval power is the cornerstone of any Empires ability to project power globally, the Spanish, the Portuguese, the British, the Americans....
However despite China's naval power they are still miles behind the US in logistics, If China where to attempt to invade Northern Australia tomorrow, assuming they control the airspace their strategic airlift capacity is about 500 troops a day. Between local garrison and US marines, the garrison in Darwin is about 7000 troops. Its also worth considering that most Australian regular army regiments are trained to a similar standard to US Rangers Frankly the Chinese would be ****ed.
True but they could royally **** shipping routes. They'd hemorrhage themselves but with Russia and Brazil and other allies maybe Xi is deluded enough to do something that stupid.
Funny you mention this over the last 6-7 years, the government has started moving as much defence manufacturing as possible onshore. From small arms to medium range missiles, there has definitely been a move to rely on home made and maintained hardware. A central pillar of our acquisition of nuclear submarines off the US/UK is our ability to maintain them at home.
Biggest issue we have at the moment is the former conservative governments acquisition of Abrams tanks to replace our Leopards, Defence wanted the latest spec of the Leopard II but the government was up the arse of the US administration so they didn't get what was asked for. The Leopard II is significantly more durable and suited for Australian conditions and additionally we already had operation experience with servicing and maintaining Leopard tanks.
We've just agreed to upgrade our current fleet of Abrams with the latest generation of Abrams, the biggest problem is their turbine engines prefer to run on jet fuel, they can use other fuel but it significantly reduces the service time of the engine. One of the significant benefits of the leopard is that it has a diesel powerplant. Diesel fuel is available at every petrol station and almost every large industrial facility and farm, its an inbuilt logistical advantage for a defender.
