This is surveillance to the extreme. And I thought traffic cameras in Europe were bad.


"Offenses that could impact social credit ratings include failing to pay a fine, jaywalking, loitering, or even not picking up after your dog. The country is working to combine its 170+ million security cameras with artificial intelligence and facial recognition technology to create a vast surveillance state in order to keep tabs on citizen's activities."

Honestly doesn't sound that bad to me. I'm generally a nice guy who picks up my dogs poop, doesn't litter (even picks up other people's garbage), helps people in need (car stuck in the snow, help fix a flat tire), and I don't have anything to hide. I couldn't care less if the government wants to watch and listen to everything I do.


I can see why some people would be against it though.

They also track purchases. Beer? Cigarettes? Score goes down.
They also track your online activity. Have an idea that you think will make China better, but is different than the current party line? Score goes down.

With a low enough score you are not allowed to use public transportation or rent an apartment and forbidden from travel in general outside your local area.

Ya it's still china so it's obviously not perfect but if there were a way to track good deeds and kindness and also punish people when they are assholes and doing things that are wrong and the hypothetical outcome was that people started acting nicer and being better people then I think that would be cool.

I totally agree. We could use more surveillance and government in our lives.

Well, people who don't bend the knee to social goodness are not very good themselves.

Im with Fish. I welcome the government peering into our lives and keeping people we dont like in check. We need that.

Beyond not allowing people to get apartments and stuff we should also censor people who fall out of line. We should not allow people to talk about things they shouldnt be talking about. Its damaging to society. We should take away all social media from those that dont obey.

Black Mirror has a pretty good episode, "Nosedive" S3 E1, that kind of shows how this could go, even if it was just social and not government driven. Plus consider, this is the beginning. China's not even very good at monitoring people compared to where they'll be 5-10 years from now. They're gonna be working out the kinks in this sort of monitoring real fast.
