None of those 15 picks are guaranteed top lottery picks esp the Cavs picks. Ainge really wasn't able to parlay his warchest of midling FRP's in Boston into anything meaninful.
If they have a chance to grab a premium lottery pick this season where they don't have championship aspirations I think that is a good thing. Using the Ainge Boston analogy.... A top pick in this draft could mean the difference between drafting a potential Tatum/Brown type stud (Ausar/Amen) or just a roleplayer in the Marcus Smart tier (Wallace/Black). That could be the difference in becoming a future championship team or just a good team barely making the playoffs every season.

Boston chose the draft road because they literally had nothing. We have something.

Ainge will choose the best path he sees based on where we are.. just like he did in Boston. I think we will get a few very good rotational pieces this draft and hopefully 1 good starter but likely need 1 more impact player through trades as well.

Just the word lottery has a profound effect on people. When I worked in the casino, there was a group where each member would throw $20 in pot every week to try and hit the lottery. I mean the lure was real and enticing- nobody wanted to be one of the poor saps left behind when this team hit (which was commonly considered to be inevitable). I got in a couple times with this group I found out later was comprised of mostly a lot of compulsive gamblers. Early on in my tenure I even got taken by a persuasive lower management guy in a Penney stock scam. But being a bird in hand kinda guy, I eventually got out, went back to school and retired a few months ago as a school teacher with a small but additional private pension fund. And some of those lottery lovers my age are still slapping cards, living in an apartment and buying their weekly lottery tickets.

You can believe me or not but Klutch is not going to settle for a Powell type contract for JC. If they do any settling it will mean he's signing with another team.
I'd be willing to wager you on it too. If they were willing to settle a new extension might already be in place.

FWIW Klutch is just another money laundering scheme for Lebron and his posse which they do under everybody's nose and Silver allows it. He has made more $ from Klutch than from his actual basketball salary contracts. This is also the money they are going to use to help buy into the future franchise in Vegas. They feel they got burned last year too. They thought they had the top 2 RFA's in Bridges and Sexton and believe they lost $20 mil in agent fees when Sexton got injured and Bridges got in legal trouble.

They are going to ask for every nickel when it comes to JC's new contract. If they settle for a Powell type contract I will leave this forum for a year..that's how sure I am. As a fan ofc I wish he would settle for less $ but this is business.

Ainge had premium high lottery picks from the Nets. Not sure the picks from Cle/Minny are going to land as top 3 picks...actually I doubt it.
If they have a chance to lose a few extra games to draft 6th instead of 11th in June I don't think it's a bad thing.

I do agree DA is not going to allow multi year tanking or anything of that nature.

I never said he would get the same contract as Powell. I just said it's the reference point because of how many similarities exist between them.

Agreed. I mean I’ve reluctantly accepted the suspicious substitutions and clock management shenanigans just to get under the playoff group. But, and you probably agree, with no pick next year, regarding Clarkson, no reason to throw the baby out with the bath water.

With our nucleus and the picks we get this year we should be in win now mode next season.

Dude, we have 15 picks to trade for proven players and you guys wanna pile up even more to maximize the pulls from the slot machine... while we have a newfound All-star whose ceiling we dont know and some good pieces around him as well.

Common sense is the exact thing that is lacking from that.

Its the common belief that "stars can only be found from the draft" which is borderline ridiculous considering the 7 foot evidence you stare in awe of every other night.

How is Lauri being drafted 7th related to anything I said? My point was, we just got a stud as part of a trade where he was hardly the featured piece.

Those guys exist elsewhere as well. Once upon a time both of us saw similar untapped potential in a bargain piece called Collins, but now his price is set to ridiculous so its off the table imo. Who are you and what have you done to that guy (I really liked him btw)?

For the actual question... the goal is not to "hover around play-in". The goal is to play hard, play for the wins and if basketball gods allow, even get to the playoffs.

If we lose and slide, then its good for our picks. If we win and rise back up to the mix for six, then its a huge positive proof of our current roster state... and we still have those 15 picks to shop/draft with.

We got a stud in a trade where we traded an all-star. I am all for buying low on guys we think could be better in our system. Trading our premium picks like you have suggested is quite the opposite.

This is just a simple disagreement. I really appreciate what you bring to the board. We should absolutely be looking at getting players like Collins if the price is reasonable.
