Cody Williams Hype and Appreciation Thread

While my eyeball test tells be that Cody looks less terrible than some of the others, he isnt an "impact defender".

No lock down ability, low stocks, opponents shoot 2.5% better when he is the closest defender (similar number to Key and Brice)... basically the only defensive impact metric I can find where he doesnt absolutely suck is deflections per36. And even there the number is nothing to marvel at.

His defensive win shares are also just barely on the positive side of the axis and among the lowest in our team. We are 6-7 in games he hasnt played in and 7-18 with him. On/off stats also put him in in 14th percentile on defense and largely thanks to Cody Svi ranks in 89th percentile on that stat.

Some of this is "detached from context" but youd think there is even some glimmer of light somewhere...

Where did you get the 2.5% better? According to NBA.com opponents shoot 5.0% worse with him as the closest defender and 10% worse on 2pt attempts.

For some reason the player profiles are not up to date, notice the 15 GP.

I see, and this actually makes sense and matches the eye test. Cody was more impactful on defense to start the year than he has been lately. I also think it makes sense that he has a positive difference in the 2pt range where it feels like he impacts shots, whereas in the 3pt range he is often the closest defender because he's the only guy that tries to closeout or rotates. He has some work to go on being a help defender and then working on his timing for recovering, but I still give him credit as one of the only guys on the team that even tries.

I see the 3FG% allowed at the individual level the same way as the team level....which is to say it's mostly just luck and I don't pay attention to it much.

Speaking of luck, Cody has been very unlucky with opponent shooting. So I think it's only fair to give him some grace for that, or at least know that part of the reason we're getting destroyed on defense with him on the court is that opponents are hitting them at an unnatural efficiency which he can't control himself.
