Cody Williams Hype and Appreciation Thread

You seem like a very intelligent human being. I'm not sure how you can't understand how these things are related.
Maybe but not not necessarily.
You can look like LeBron and be unskilled and have a poor mentality.
Might or might not be the case with Cody

Cody shooting .429 from 3 in this summer league.

The mentality will come. Would love to see him do some Izzo/Spartans like drills to work on the aggressive mentality of crashing the boards. Even on the sweet floater he hit, you can see once he releases it, he just stands there watching, with no getting into position to grab off a miss. Not worried about it. He obviously worked his *** off the last few months. These are things coaching and a talented older brother can push him to do.

The degree to which it helps is on the hopium scale, but I don't see how getting stronger won't help.

Getting stronger will help him look more skilled. He will be stronger getting to the rim and won't have to avoid contact as much leading to better angles at the basket. Last night he drove to the basket and was bumped which totally threw off his balance and he lost the ball. It had nothing to do with dribbling ability and everything to do with strength.

Getting stronger gives him more ways to be useful on the court that don't involve as much skill. He can play more down low, be more physical on defense, fight for rebounds, etc.

Playing well and being useful will improve his confidence. Being more confident should improve his willingness to try and do more things on the court.

No guarantees it makes as much difference as he needs, but I cant imagine it won't help.

Just watched that cody highlight video from the game. Very very nice. Hardy gonna have his hands full getting everyone minutes and touches. Very good that we got ride of the vets we got rid of.

Cody looked very good last night
Seems to have good mechanics and form on his jump shot

For the people who know more about shooting: what does it mean if someone seems to be shooting pretty well but also drops some pretty bad airballs/wild misses? Is that like a focus thing usually?

In my limited experience, what you're describing is due to being a mechanical shooter. Fluid shooters just focus on the rim and put the ball up with an emphasis on releasing the ball well from their fingertips, even if they're off balance or their shot setup isn't thorough. Whereas, a mechanical shooter is thinking about his shot preparation--e.g., "Okay, I need to square up with my right foot in front of my left foot. I need to bend my knees and get under the ball, get my left elbow out and my right elbow in to be in front of my body..." They're so focused on the shot preparation that they end up being stiff, they release the ball badly and shoot an airball 4 feet short. The shot isn't fluid or just muscle memory yet. This makes sense if Cody is learning how to shoot from NBA distance or he isn't comfortable just shooting off the catch.

Another possibility would be if he's just trying to speed up his release and he mishandles the ball. I'm noticing that Cody's hands aren't particularly great. He sometimes drops passes on cuts that he probably should be able to handle. He probably isn't catching the ball cleanly on some of his spot ups. Catching the ball consistently is a big factor in shooting well.

That could indicate a number of different things.
