Cody Williams Hype and Appreciation Thread

I don't see it working out for Cody in the NBA. Hope I'm wrong. It's a motor issue, which I don't know is something that can be fixed.

Are there any serious examples of NBA players that have performed similar to Cody in their first couple seasons that ended up being a notable NBA player?
I don't know about "notable," but as far as a long career, the answer is yes and he played for the Jazz: C.J. Miles.

EDIT: Harder to compare stats because he was a big man, but Jermaine O'Neal was also quite bad for a few seasons.

CJ and Cody have similar builds and strength issues.

I’m not sure either, but I don’t think everyone has to be a defensive playmaker. Elite defenders like Draymond dictate offenses and create chaos, but they need teammates who can adjust and keep the defense intact. For example, prime Klay Thompson wasn’t a disruptive player, but he was still a really solid defender.

I agree with your last point. Players like Cody don’t create extra possessions for the team.

But Klay would have been better if he was a better disruptive. I don’t really buy into this idea that disrupters need non-disruptors to succeed. Like I don’t think the Warriors defense drops off if they play Iggy instead of Klay.

I think Cody can get to that “really solid” level just by being a strong on ball defender….just saying defense amounts to way more than that.

I definitely agree. I wasn’t trying to imply that Draymond needs non-disruptive players around him. My point was more that when the Warriors were a top-three defense year after year, Draymond was surrounded by high-IQ defenders who could adjust on the fly, make the correct rotations, and consistently force low-efficiency shots. If those players also happened to be disruptive, even better.

I just see a lot of value in things that don’t directly disrupt plays or create extra possessions: switchability, screen navigation, discipline within the scheme, shot discipline, early rotations, etc. Of course, there are levels to defense, and ideally you want a defender who can do all of that and still force chaos. I don’t think we actually disagree in the end. It’s mostly just a difference in where we draw the line on what makes a good defender.

No matter what, the one thing you need is NBA basketball players, not "physical specimens", "sets of tools", "athletics", "wingspans"....
Are CD or TH NBA basketball players? That's the question to be answered.
