Cody Williams Hype and Appreciation Thread

No matter what, the one thing you need is NBA basketball players, not "physical specimens", "sets of tools", "athletics", "wingspans"....
Are CD or TH NBA basketball players? That's the question to be answered.

There is something there deep beneath the surface.

He has NBA athleticism and size, and can move his feet defensively. He has enough of that to be a threat in transition. He just has to learn how to shoot and/or be more confident/forceful in his drives.

He has the potential to be our best wing defender. If I had to give minutes to him or Taylor, I would probably opt for Cody as I see his defensive potential being so much higher

I know he turned 21 recently, but I still have not seen anything that has persuaded me Cody is an NBA player
He has the body of a prototypical NBA player now. Mentally, he has been playing with an edge lately.

Cody will have a long NBA career... at least as a bench player. Calm, smart, coachable, consistent effort on defense, gets along with everyone - teams like this type of players. And if he develops any semblance of a shot he will be a starter in a couple of years.

Tidjane Salaun's improvement is giving me hope for Cody. Salaun is much more physically mature+higher motor, but he was about as bad as Cody last year and he's looking like a clear rotation guy now.

Best part of Cody's performance last game was getting 6 rebounds in a steal. He needs to be more active. Kind of like a Corey Brewer.

No idea where people are getting this optimism from. Cody had some decent performances last season too and it never led to anything.

Almost all his trad and advanced stats are trending in the wrong direction. He's lost like 50% of his minutes, his FTA's have disappeared completely, and he's shooting a handsome 11% from the perimeter.

Not to mention that the eye test is still very unkind to him.

Why is this thread still breathing? Give it a rest.

Dude has made a few 100% normal basketball plays and all of a sudden he is a prospect again? Has he managed to lower expectations to the level where one alley oop is newsworthy?

I don’t really care about the alley-oop or the transition layups he made.

He’s on his way to becoming a very solid perimeter defender, and we absolutely lack players like that. He rarely gets beaten off the dribble. Unlike most of the other young guys on the roster, he stays locked in defensively after the first and second efforts, and he doesn’t make dumb mistakes like fouling jump shooters or overhelping.

It’s basic stuff, but we don’t have many players with both good defensive instincts and athleticism. I’m not saying he will be Jaden McDaniels, but a similar trajectory isn’t that far-fetched given the tools.

Very solid perimeter defender is not a job in the NBA. In our team context he looks better than he is, but thats because the measuring bar is so low. However even in our team context Tech was better, Dunn was way better, Harkless is way better... and all those 3 came from scrap heap and yet are better offensive players than Cody.

The reason I dont trust him ever becoming a keeper 3&D player is very simple: He has ZERO dawg in him. Thats a mandatory feature for that role. Even the most introvert guys who are great at that 3&D job (take OG Anunoby for instance) often look like bullies on tape. Cody doesnt.

You’re right. I just think his defensive ceiling is much higher than Tech’s or Harkless’s. Because of his combination of lateral quickness and length, he can fall a full step behind and still recover on the ball handler with ease. Unlike Tech, he could take more risks without getting burned, and those extra risks give him more ways to impact the team defense. At the moment he avoids taking any risks.

Offensively, he’s starting to look more comfortable, but with a broken jump shot, he’ll never be a meaningful rotation piece on a good team. Time will tell if he can fix that.

We all hope he has some miraculous leap in him, since we all would rather want him turning into a real boy. But he should not be discussed as much as he is. This thread is front page every day of the week while threads about Brice, Ace, Flip, Collier and WCJ are nowhere to be seen. Key had to reach all-star level of play before he became more of a topic than Cody which is ridiculous.

LIke for instance why are we discussing Cody (12th guy on depth chart?) more than Ace (rookie starter)? Last post on Ace's "hype thread" was 8th of November, and his ROY thread (which should be pretty dead tbf) was 4th of December. This thread has 4 pages since last post was made in either Ace thread.

Lets snap out of this please.

The problem is that nothing Cody does has any volume. He's so incredibly passive that these brief, rare bursts of normal NBA activity look like "leveling up".

It's not about minutes. Sure he doesn't play much, but he also doesn't try to make the most of the minutes he DOES get. You just never see NBA players who don't seem to care whether they play or not. To me that's a terrible red flag.
