Collier’s Future

Look at what happened in Houston once they added some actual NBA vet talent. It wasn't even top shelf, but their young players have come along faster.
Houston growth (imho) has a lot to do with Ime Udoku. He was the coach that took the Celtics from good - great up to great - elite. He is a good coach. Horny for staffers, but a good development coach. Repeating it in Houston is super compelling for me.

Let’s get to the more critical question:

We still get to call him Thwomp, right? That doesn’t change now that he’s good?

Considering how long he’s been getting real minutes making the top ten is pretty darn impressive!
He averaged 7.5 APG in January in 28.8 mpg, and now in February so far 10.0 APG in 32.2 mpg. And this all comes with the starting lineup fluctuating a lot around him, making it even more impressive.

He will finish top 5 if he keeps up his current level of play.

Absolutely, well deserved and your analysis is appreciated and spot on! I was just thinking about that very point last night - how this revolving door playing roster makes Collier’s job so difficult. Particularly when he’s out there with the Mash unit like last night, his numbers are going to take a hit! (Actually surprised that with all the suspicious injury and rest status activity this season that Silver hasn’t hit us with fines.)

The NBA doesnt care what the Jazz do. They care more about stars resting in marquee games than anything else.

Hard not to get excited about Collier. We may be onto something with the Collier - Keyonte combo. Isaiah is clearly a better true PG and that may free up Keyonte to be more of a "microwave scorer" type, even if that means he comes off the bench.

Hard to get too attached to either, though. That goes with anyone on the roster. Assuming we're still in "acquire best star player available" mode it feels like any of these guys could get moved on a dime.

Collier's going to be very good
He's strong enough to make just about any pass
Great court vision, great quickness, very good ball handler, etc

The best thing about him is how he makes *every* other player better.

  • Key gets the ball in better places to drive or shoot.
  • Lauri/Kessler/Collins start spamming dunks at the rim.
  • Flip plays with more confidence and they have a good two-man game going
and so forth.

The other players are licking their chops to move and crash and run because they know they'll get rewarded.

He plays very energetic defense and fights successfully through screens.

The dude is FAAAST. He had an end to end fast break last night that had everyone humming with excitement- the speed was 1% even in the NBA- there is probably nobody actually faster in the league and a very few in his category.

His on the move middles are looking smooth, and his three is visibly improving over time.

His turnovers and at the basket shots need some work, but they are probably some of the easiest things to fix.

He has a Sexton attack dog mentality with a pass first philosophy- he IS our PG of the present and future and a potential all-NBA player. All the things that made him the #1 recruit coming into college are surfacing and got my mouth watering for the future.
You talk about everything except the most important one - shooting.

Tyrese Haliburton is fifth currently in the league at 8.5 assist per game. Collier will be even better next year. Could he lead the league as soon as next year?

For a point guard, averaging an absolute **** ton of assists while having a very small usage % and playing just 23mpg is a dead giveway of being unable or unwilling to shoot. Often both.

(See: Rubio, Ricky.)

I like Collier a lot but he's still in his honeymoon phase with the NBA. The league is in the process of figuring out his non-shooting, and in the next stage, teams will start to play way off him. He's quick and strong, but those advantages will be mitigated by defenders giving him tons of space.

The age of the "pass first, pass second" PG is over. At least for starting players.

So, what your saying is you don’t really like him, got it.
