Coronavirus

My sister in law recently decided that she will believe the conspiracy theories that is was a hoax and never existed. She even had 2 relatives (on her other side of the family) and a close friend killed by COVID. But suddenly they are rehashing the conspiracies so she decided she needs to believe it. When asked what killed her friend and paused and said "pretty sure it was the Democrats". I **** you not. Un-****ing-believable.
Not surprised. I live in Utah and attend LDS church. lol.

Annnnddd this is why I think we’re in for a generation of right wing authoritarianism: women dying from easily preventable causes, children dying from easily preventable diseases, loss of freedoms, stagnant economy, and a loss of peace and prosperity. We need a generation of misery unfortunately to wake more Americans up from this mass psychosis of boredom, tribal identity, and people seeking entertainment and meaning through ridiculous conspiracies.

Just out of curiosity, does your sister in law have a full time job or does she stay at home? Is she college educated? Is she a practicing Christian? Is she white and living a pretty prosperous life?

It’s amazing to me how often lack of (formal) education, boredom, religion or tribal identity, and prosperity go hand in hand with these things. So many voters are bored as **** and need to make **** up (the librarians are grooming kids, vaccines cause autism, covid 19 isn’t real, George soros is buying elections) to find entertainment and causes to fight against.

Here is something wild. We had this conversation with my SIL over the past couple of days and then Bill Maher posted a video about exactly this issue. The cult is real. I posted the video for you guys to see too. Bill is one of them keeping this all very very real. Thank God for people like him right now, maintaining some level of sanity. I seriously never thought I'd ****ing say THAT.

She is not college educated. She is in one of these non-denominational Christian things where they speak in tongues and have seizures on the floor caught up in the rapture. She is relatively intelligent. She is just fully in the cult. It's really sad to see actually.

200mg of Strychnine should sort her seizures....

Wait till you consider maybe it was Trump who ordered the release of COVID in China from the Wuhan lab in order to attack China, and it backfired.

Not far fetched IMO.

This is what the right wing anti vax nonsense is doing to us. A third child who would’ve been fine had they been vaccinated, has died.

Always a positive when bs can be corrected….And few sling it more than Jim Jordan. Love how he always has his sleeves rolled up, likes giving the impression that he’s “no nonsense, rolling up his sleeves and working for you!” lol, what an arse…..such a huge phony…

Science's COVID-19 reporting is supported by the Pulitzer Center and the Heising-Simons Foundation.

In the wake of the dramatic news of a potentially effective COVID-19 vaccine, President Donald Trump posted a flurry of tweets that claimed its makers, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), and Democrats had conspired to suppress the announcement until after the 3 November presidential election. The U.S. company involved, Pfizer, "didn't have the courage to do it before," Trump asserted on 9 November. And FDA and Democrats, he wrote, "didn't want to have me get a Vaccine WIN, prior to the election, so instead it came out five days later."

Initially, Pfizer and its German partner BioNTech suggested they might have preliminary trial results by late October—a timetable Pfizer's CEO, Albert Bourla, projected as recently as 29 September. The timeline was based on a plan that called for an outside panel to take a first look at the efficacy data for the vaccine when a total of 32 cases of COVID-19 had accumulated in the vaccine and placebo groups. But the companies and FDA later agreed on a protocol change that nearly doubled that number and delayed that review.

There is no evidence, however, that the decision had anything to do with presidential politics. And the companies flat out reject at Trump's claims. "What people believe is their business," Kathrin Jansen, who heads vaccine R&D at Pfizer, told ScienceInsider. "Quite frankly, we had no time and still have no time to deal with politics. We are at this 24/7, thousands of people working diligently to make this work. And for us, it was never about politics, it was always about just the disaster that we were in the middle of, all of us globally, seeing the devastation and the deaths."

Given that Pfizer and BioNTech only described their results in a press release that had scant details beyond the finding that it had greater than 90% efficacy, ScienceInsider followed up with company representatives and other vaccine experts to address some of the confusion surrounding the vaccine.
